Ready For Something Weird? Check Out The Great Yokai War: Guardians

Back during my time running Monster Island News I had the pleasure of rubbing elbows with really great people in the movie and television industry. One of those great people is movie publicist Avery Guerra. If you have an independent fantasy or foreign film there is no one better in the biz than Avery at getting the word out about it.

Avery still keeps me in the loop on a lot of this stuff even though I haven't written about these kinds of films in years. Today he sent something my way that I couldn't help but take a bite at.

If you are looking for a movie that looks just plain crazy check out The Great Yokai War: Guardians  from Japanese film maker Takashi Mike. If you are familiar with Mike's prior films then you know he has a reputation for churning out some gonzo material.

This film is no different.

The trailer for The Great Yokai War: Guardians just dropped in Japan and it is too crazy not to write about. It starts out with a typical scene from a Japanese sci-fi in which a bunch of people a running for their lives (see Godzilla, Gamera, Rodan, Mothra and Mushroom People) then we see a boy with a leaf on his eye being questioned by a big brained guy. My Japanese is a bit rusty but I'm sure that the boy is complaining that Brain just passed wind.

That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Some truly bonkers cinema.

The rest is one part Lord of the Rings, one part video game, one part samurai flick, one part Ghost Rider (for some reason) and one part acid trip.

Check this out if you aren't under the influence .... on second thought maybe you need to be:

A film like this could only come out of Japan!

I had to highlight this one frame from the trailer that included some interesting cameos you may have missed.

Let's take a look at whos hanging out in this scene. I spy The Cyclops from Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Frankenstein, Pennywise, the Creature from the Black Lagoon in a leisure suit (nice touch) something that may be an Ewok, a fat guy I saw on the bus one time and possibly Diana Ross on the far right. I can't tell for sure because I can only see half of her. None the less, some of the most famous monsters in history.

I wonder what that's about?

Let your crazy flag fly Land of the Rising Sun!

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

The Force in Star Wars | May the 4th Be With You | Miracle Mindset

The Force in the Star Wars universe bears many striking similarities to spiritual concepts found in Christianity. Much like how Christians believe in an all-encompassing, omnipresent God, the Force is described as an energy field created by all living things that surrounds and penetrates living beings and binds the galaxy together. There is a light and dark side to the Force, mirroring the battle between good and evil, angels and demons in Christian theology. The path of the Jedi, who align with the light side of the Force, is one of self-sacrifice, discipline, and overcoming temptation - very much like the Christian walk of faith. The Jedi are guided by the Force just as Christians are led by the Holy Spirit. And in the same way that Jesus' ultimate sacrifice defeated sin and death and offers salvation to mankind, the heroic sacrifices of Jedi like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker bring hope and turn the tide against the evil Empire. The Star Wars saga is a timeless story of goo...
