Great Locomotives Still With Us: Union Pacific E-8 No. 942

Image
Photographer: Ken Hulsey Location: Orange County Railroad Museum (Perris, Ca) Information from the Orange Empire Railroad Museum Website - HERE This engine was built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors Corp. in May 1953, as an E8-A locomotive: an E-unit of the 8th model variation (2250 horsepower, later upgraded to 2400 hp), designated "A" because it is a leading engine with cab (compared to boxy non-cab "B" trailing engines). It was part of an order of 17 E-8As for the Union Pacific (UP) system. The Union Pacific placed the E-8s in their general passenger service pool, and in general used them to replace older steam and diesel engines. One of the UP 942's more glamorous assignments was as one of several engines pulling the famous streamliner City of Los Angeles on runs between Chicago and Los Angeles. This notable train used streamlined locomotives and cars, all painted in the distinctive UP colors of Armour yellow with red stripes, and carr...

In A Post Roe World It Is Time To Rethink Safe And Effective Birth Control

Image
I wonder why there is such a push for abortion as birth control these days when there are other options that are 99% effective in preventing an unwanted pregnancy. Abortion is a choice but so is taking steps to make the need for one almost nonexistent. I think that we need to start promoting these options more. From the Cleveland Clinic Progestin arm implant – Nexplanon® What is it? It delivers a progestin hormone (no estrogen), over a three-year period. How can I get it? Nexplanon® is placed by a physician who is certified in this procedure. How effective is it? Nexplanon® is almost 100 percent effective. It is the most effective form of reversible contraception, with less chance of failure than even female sterilization. Intrauterine device (IUD) What is it? An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, flexible, T-shaped device that is placed into th...

The Odds Of You Waking Up Tomorrow On Another Planet Aren't Impossible - But Merely Highly Improbable

Image
I'm not capable of doing the math on this one but it seems that there is a possibility that I could wake up on Mars tomorrow. The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy suggests taking a towel with me but I think a jacket and a good book would be in order.  PHYSICIST SAYS THERE'S A SMALL CHANCE YOU'LL WAKE UP ON MARS TOMORROW DUE TO QUANTUM PHYSICS From The Byte Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku says he often gives his students a particular thought experiment: to calculate the probability that they wake up on Mars tomorrow, due to the vagaries of the theory of multiple universes. Though the question seems decidedly wacky, Kaku writes in a New York Times column about the wondrous intrigue of quantum physics, which pits the possible versus the likely. "Quantum theory," Kaku writes, "is based on what is known as Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, allowing for a small probability that we can exist even on distant places like Mars." Given this principle, ...
