Stand Back by Stevie Nicks - Friday Night Videos | From the Album The Wild Heart (1983)

Image
By Ken Hulsey It's Friday, folks - in case you somehow didn't know. That means it's time for another episode of Friday Night Videos! Now, I usually like to share a little story to explain why I've chosen a particular artist to feature. But this week? I got nothin'. Zilch. Nada. I wish I could regale you with some wild tale about Stevie Nicks - you know, like how we met in a hotel bar one night and totally hit it off. And to make a long story short, we had this hot and heavy weekend together, and she started falling for me, but I just wasn't ready for a serious relationship, so I had to let her down easy. Alas, none of that ever happened.

Shandi by KISS - Friday Night Videos | From the Album Unmasked (1980)

Image
Written By Ken Hulsey I decided to take a slightly different approach with this week's Friday Night Videos feature. After some consideration, I selected a video that I'm fairly certain you've never seen before. And as per the laws of rock and roll, I must make the obligatory introduction: “You wanted the best and you got the best, the hottest band in the world … KISS!”

Berlin - No More Words | Friday Night Videos: 80s Pop Music

Image
Written By Ken Hulsey Tonight's Friday Night Videos features Berlin's 1984 hit "No More Words" from their album "Love Life". This was the first music video I remember seeing on the program, with the band taking on the personas of the legendary 1930s outlaws Bonnie and Clyde during a bank heist. Prior to this release, Berlin had found international success with their debut album "Pleasure Victim", which included hits like "The Metro", "(I'm A) Sex", and "Masquerade".

Ken's Hot Traxx: Mayer Hawthorne - For All Time

Image
I have been a huge fan of Mayer Hawthorne ever since I heard the track A Long Time played over a local Los Angeles radio station back in 2011. I love Hawthorne's style of music, which I often refer to as Modern Retro, a blend of classic soul mixed with elements of modern pop. When my wife and I watched him perform at the Winter Classic NHL hockey game in 2014 she felt that his performance resembled a modern day Steely Dan, which I totally agreed with at the time. Now Hawthorne is back with another soul filled release entitled For All Time, which takes the listener on a musical journey that would seem more at home a record store shelf in the late 1960s or early 1970s than sharing space with Taylor Swift and Drake. That, of course, is a good thing in my opinion.

Ken's Hot Traxx - Yumi Zouma: EP IV

Image
Four years ago, I discovered the alternative pop group Yumi Zouma from New Zealand and have been a huge fan of their music ever since. In December, the band released their latest album, EP IV, which offers more of their signature soothing blend of synth- and guitar-driven alternative pop paired with Christie Simpson's angelic vocals.

Ken's Hot Traxx - The Struts: Pretty Vicious

Image
The Struts crank out some good old fashioned rock n roll with their latest album, Pretty Vicious. The Derby (UK) rock band, The Struts, are comprised of Luke Spiller, Adam Slack, Jed Elliott and Gethin Davies. Pretty Vicious is the band's fourth release via The Big Machine label. Following on from 2020’s ‘Strange Days’, the forthcoming record was co-produced by The Struts alongside Julian Raymond (Fleetwood Mac, Cheap Trick). It was executive produced by Big Machine Label Group CEO Scott Borchetta.

Ken's Hot Traxx - Cannons: Heartbeat Highway

Image
The Los Angeles based indie pop trio Cannons have released an album that is the perfect soundtrack for the 21st century.  From Sony Music: The 12-song project follows CANNONS’ 2022 album Fever Dream and marks their first collaborations with co-writers and producers in Jason Evigan, Tyler Spry, Mike Elizondo, Mikky Ekko, and Jenn Decilveo on select tracks. Featuring lead singles “Crush,” “Desire,” “Bad Tattoo,” and “Loving You,” which is nearing top 10 at Alternative radio, Heartbeat Highway takes listeners on a ride through the heart’s ups and downs.

Ken's Hot Traxx - The Bamboos: This is How You Do It

Image
I have been a huge fan of the Australian alternative/pop/jazz fusion band The Bamboos for a little over a decade now. I really love their upbeat music and their mixture of different composition styles always seems to keep their sound fresh. A lot of their stuff leans heavily on both jazz and funk, which always makes me think of the great bands of the seventies.

VCCS - Top Ten Classic Rock Hits (Volume Four)

Image
A few weeks ago I began creating yet another mega playlist that I entitled VCCS which stands for Vinyl - Cassette - CD - Streaming. It's a list that reflects my own personal experience with rock music. The list should probably have began with an "R" for radio, but I decided to go with the music that I actually owned on vinyl records. The progression of course then went to cassette tapes (because you couldn't play an LP in a Walkman) then CDs and now via streaming services like iHeart and Spotify. So far I have gotten up to 1984, so if you are a fan of late 70s and early 80s rock you will love this! 10. Duran Duran - Careless Memories 9. Bananarama - Cruel Summer 8. ZZ Top - Legs 7. U2 - Two Hearts Beat As One 6. The Pretenders - Message Of Love 5. Kajagoogoo - Too Shy 4. Def Leppard - Photograph 3. Triumph - Fight The Good Fight 2. Pat Benatar - Precious Time 1. The Police - Can't Stand Losing You

VCCS - Top Ten Classic Rock Hits (Volume Two)

Image
If you have been reading this blog for any period of time you know that one of my favorite ways to pass time is creating playlists. Over the past decade I must have created hundreds of them. Why I keep making the these over and over is a mystery even to me, but I keep making them, deleting them, and making new ones.  A few weeks ago I began creating yet another mega playlist that I entitled VCCS which stands for Vinyl - Cassette - CD - Streaming. So I invite you to take this journey along with me and enjoy listening to VCCS: On a side note I have also opened my own record store via a partnership with Ama...

Blondie (The Best Of ...) Playlist

Image
Blondie has always been one of my favorite bands of all time so I decided to spend a little of my free time putting together what I consider their ultimate playlist on iHeart Radio. This playlist follows the bands musical journey from its original lineup from the 1970s all the way to the modern incarnation. Band lore states that their name came from both a flippant reference to Adolf Hitler 's dog Blondie as well as vocalist Harry's bright blond hair. Previously having been a Playboy Bunny, Harry fronted the early version of the band. initially known as "Angel and the Snakes". They built up underground fame in NYC. Blondie released their first album, ' Blondie ', in 1976. The album was mildly successful and spawned the Australian hit single " In The Flesh ". Gary Valentine left the band later that year, and they continued briefly as a foursome, recording ' Plastic Letters ' and gaining more airplay with their track " Denis ". Stil...
