Preserved Santa Fe Steam Locomotive 3751 and Bicentennial Painted SD45-2 5704 return to Los Angeles Union Station!

Join us on Saturday, September 9th, and Sunday, September 10th from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. as the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS) proudly partners with Union Station, Metro, Amtrak, and Metrolink for Los Angeles Union Station Train Festival 2023: A Celebration of Past, Present & Future.

Train enthusiasts of all ages are invited to see rail equipment, including Santa Fe 3751, on the tracks from various decades since the opening of the Station, marvel at the rarest of model train exhibits, participate in tours about the history, restoration, and art throughout the building and experience other unique activities celebrating the legacy and future of Union Station and Southern California's rail systems.


The Southern California Railway Museum's ex-ATSF No. 5704, repainted into its resplendent bicentennial paint scheme that it originally wore in 1976, will be on display with us at Los Angeles Union Station Train Festival 2023: A Celebration of Past, Present & Future .

Built in 1973, the venerable SD45-2 was given the duty of wearing these patriotic colors as part of the nation's bicentennial of the American Revolution. Following a hard-working career with the Santa Fe Railway and the BNSF Railway, the unit was retired and donated to the Southern California Railway Museum in late 2021.

After an exceptional restoration by partners that included BNSF, Mid America Car Inc. - Locomotive and Sherwin-Williams, the beautifully repainted locomotive made the journey from its restoration site in Kansas to California.

This will be the first time that No. 5704 will be on public display since arriving in California, so be sure to have your cameras ready!

Nighttime Photo Session with 3751 Just Added!

But we've been given a "Highball!"

It is with great excitement we would like to announce our first Night Photo Session since AT&SF 3751's return to steam! This is a closed photo session that provides the unique opportunity to photograph the 3751 on the beautifully refurbished Santa Fe turntable. Amtrak truly did an amazing job!

This will be a night session using only available light. There will be no strobes or additional lighting.

The cost is $125 per participant and can be paid through the SBRHS.org website using the 'donation' tab, or you can pay at our Merchandise Booth at LA Union Station's "Train Festival 2023."

The AT&SF paid Baldwin Locomotive Works $ 99,712.77 for No. 3751, the thirteenth 4-8-4 of 892 constructed between 1926 and 1950 for U.S. railroads. A joint design effort of Santa Fe Mechanical Engineer Howard H. Lanning, his staff, and Baldwin, Santa Fe's first 4-8-4 was a mixture of conservative design and the best locomotive technology of that time. - READ MORE

Ex Santa Fe 4-6-4 #3450 stands proud in her final resting place at the LA County Fairgrounds in Pamona, Ca. The locomotive was once the pride of the Santa Fe Railroad and provided power for some of the lines signature trains including the Scout, California Limited, Grand Canyon and Chief. - READ MORE

Restored Santa Fe Steam Locomotive # 2926 To Make Another Trip To Tractor Brewing Co in Albuquerque

The train first trundled down the street in May, showing off for the first time the restorations that took decades to complete. The steam engine was restored by the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society after it was purchased from the city for $1 in 1999. Prior to that, the train had languished in Coronado Park for more than 40 years. - READ MORE

 About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
