Louisiana Through My Lens - Experiencing The Solar Eclipse at The Old Louisiana State Capitol

Today my wife and I decided to take a short trip down to Baton Rouge to tour the Old Louisiana State Capitol. As an added bonus while we were touring the inside of the historic building the 'Ring of Fire' solar eclipse took place. Not having the proper accessories to be able to view the phenomena directly we opted to watch the moon pass in front of the sun through the majestic mosaic skylight. The eclipse provided some interesting hues that actually accentuated the colors inside the beautiful structure.

The Old Louisiana State Capitol is full of some amazing historical items and displays including several rooms dedicated to the turbulent political career and assassination of the infamous Huey P. Long. Long was such a polarizing figure here in this state. In fact one room has a gigantic crack painted right down the middle with one side featuring all the modern improvements he helped orchestrate for the state of Louisiana and the other featuring the depth of his corruption.

Yet more rooms showcase exhibits about the history of the building, the city of Baton Rouge and several nearby towns. There are also relics from Louisiana's political past and new set of exhibits featuring items from our nations Civil Defense efforts during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

If you are in the Baton Rouge area a trip to the Old Louisiana State Capitol is a must. Best of all the admission is FREE and the parking outside is FREE on the weekend! You can't beat a bargain like that,

Beautiful Louisiana - A Rainy Day Walk Through Downtown Baton Rouge

Directly across the street was the picturesque First Presbyterian Church and in-between was a lovely tree-lined green belt walking path. I ventured onto the path and began my walk westward toward the Mississippi River. Almost immediately I can upon the beautiful white house and property that once served as the original Louisiana Governor's Mansion. Further down the way - READ MORE

Louisiana Through My Lens - Why is there a Cannon embedded in a Baton Rouge Sidewalk?

Anyone walking down 3rd Street in downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana may (or may not) notice a strange cylindrical metal object sticking out of the sidewalk. The object is rather obscure and one would be lead to believe that it my be some sort of old sewer pipe or something like that. Most people that pass by this object and generally don't give it a second thought. - READ MORE

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
