Skybound to bring Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives! to Comics this April

From Skybound Entertainment:

One of the most beloved monsters in horror film history rises from the murky depths once more this year with Universal Monsters: Creature from The Black Lagoon Lives. Even MORE exciting, the book is crafted by three of the most celebrated comic creators working today — writers Dan Watters and Ram V, along with artist Matthew Roberts. And comic book fans are sure to salivate over the lineup of artists illustrating the book’s variant covers, including Joshua Middleton, Joëlle Jones, and Alex Ross! Check out an advance look at all this goodness after these official deets from Skybound HQ…

Skybound Entertainment, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, has announced Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!, a new four-issue limited comic book series from acclaimed writers Dan Watters (Home Sick Pilots, Lucifer) and Ram V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, Batman: Detective Comics), along with artist Matthew Roberts (Manifest Destiny), and colorist Dave Stewart (UltraMega, Hellboy). Readers can expect to dive headfirst into a world of suspense, intrigue, and terror when this first issue hits comic book shops April 2024.

This collaboration between Skybound and Universal is the latest milestone in a near decade long relationship that encompasses film, video games, and now comic book publishing. Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives! is the second Universal Monsters series launch, following James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Dracula, and will be followed by more new limited series pairing the biggest names in comics with pop culture’s most iconic monsters.

In addition to the Creature himself, the series introduces new characters like journalist Kate Marsden and serial killer Darwin Collier, along with a returning character from the film – the mysterious Doctor Edwin Thompson.

“We’re so thrilled to announce our second book in the Universal Monsters line.” Said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “Dan Watters and Ram V are two of the most exciting writers in comics, and to be able to turn them loose with longtime Skybound creators Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart has been an absolute treat. And while James & Martin’s DRACULA was an adaptation of the original film, CREATURE is a brand-new story featuring beloved Gill-Man. Each book in the Universal Monsters line will feel different from the last, with each creative team bringing their own unique flavor and passion to these iconic horror characters. I can’t wait to share what else we have planned!”

Years after the events of the original film, Journalist Kate Marsden hunts for a notorious serial killer in the heart of the Amazon. Hot on the trail of this madman, she soon encounters an unexpected new threat–but is he friend or foe? Or is he simply…THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON?

Picking up where the original films left off, this new Universal Monsters tale will take readers back to the mysterious Amazonian lagoon where terror lurks beneath its murky waters. This series is perfect for new readers and longtime fans alike.

Rare Unpublished Life Magazine Photos of the Creature From The Black Lagoon

Back in November of 2008 Life Magazine dug up a batch of unpublished photos of Ben Chapman and Julie Adams from the 1954 Universal horror classic Creature From The Black Lagoon. These shots were taken on the back lot of Universal and feature Chapman in the 'publicity' version of the Creature costume and Adams in her famous white bathing suite that was featured in the film.

Long Lost 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' Spoof

I think that it is safe to say that every horror and monster movie fan has heard of the Universal classic 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' and it's two sequels 'Revenge of the Creature' and 'The Creature Walks Among Us'. Yet how many of you have ever heard of the 1955 horror classic 'Return of the Creature?'

Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954)(Universal)

Creature from the Black Lagoon was the last of a long line of classic movie monsters developed by Universal Pictures. By the 1950's most studios had switched from horror pictures to science fiction. Universal was no exception. Creature would come fresh on the heels of the very popular "It Came from Outer Space." Both films would star Richard Carlson who soon would become the studio's staple playing the role of hero scientist. This would be a twist from most films. Scientists were generally portrayed as evil or misguided. It was only logical for Universal to blend both their popular horror with the science fiction of the time. Creature from the Black Lagoon would be created from the melding of the two.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
