I think that things have gotten way to serious around here lately so I decided to kick off this rainy Tuesday with some classic comedy.
Way back in the late 1970s Saturday Night Live was one of the funniest shows on television (yes SNL used to be funny) and every weekend my buddy and I would watch it religiously.
At the end of one of the episodes that was hosted by Steve Martin the comedian walked out on the stage and uttered a sentence that would live on in television history, "What the hell is that?". A few minutes later SNL regular Bill Murray would wander onto the stage and the two would begin bantering in utter confusion as to what exactly they were both gawking at.
It was a great bit of comedic improv that showcased just how brilliant both Martin and Murray actually are. There is no set, there are no props (aside from Martin's camera) and the audience never sees what they see.. It's just the two comedians out there performing raw.
And it was brilliant.
Since the sketch happened at the end of an episode I always believed that it was indeed an improv to fill in time after the show had run short but I could find no information to support that. In fact I couldn't find any information about the sketch online at all.
Never the less this is one of the greatest SNL skits of all time.
