Supertrain - The Biggest Bomb in Television History | From The Land Of Forgotten Television | Retro TV Rewind

Image
Written By Ken Hulsey Way back in 1979, NBC took a huge gamble on a TV series called Supertrain - a giant, atomic-powered "cruise ship on wheels" that traveled from New York to Los Angeles. This train-based monstrosity had all the trappings of a trendy 70s hotspot - a swimming pool, casino, shopping center, and disco. Each week, a star-studded cast including the likes of Joyce DeWitt, Jamie Farr, and Isabel Sanford would board the train for adventures filled with thrills, laughs, and romance.

Project U.F.O. (Project Blue Book) - From The Land of Forgotten Television | Retro TV Rewind

Image
Ezekiel saw the wheel. This is the wheel he said he saw. These are Unidentified Flying Objects that people say they are seeing now. Are they proof that we are being visited by civilizations from other stars? Or just what are they? The United States Air Force began an investigation of this high strangeness in a search for the truth. What you are about to see is part of that 20 year search. - Radio and television veteran Jack Webb spoke these words to open the premiere episode of the series 'Project: U.F.O.' Project U.F.O. was a late 1970s NBC television series that ran for two seasons, from 1978 to 1979. The show was loosely based on the real-life Project Blue Book and created by Dragnet veteran Jack Webb, who pored through Air Force files to find episode ideas. In the first season, the show faithfully reflected the Project Blue Book files, with most UFO sightings explained, and only a few remaining unexplained. However, in the second season, the storylines took a turn, as the ...

Genesis Climber Mospeada - Robotech Anime Series | Fuji TV

Image
Written By: Ken Hulsey In 1984, Carl Macek sought to import a Japanese anime series, the famous Chôjikû yôsai Macross, to the United States for syndication. However, the series was only 36 episodes long, shorter than the standard 65-episode American syndicated show. To remedy this, Macek obtained two additional unrelated series, Chôjikû kidan Southern Cross and Kikô sôseiki Mospeada, and hired a team of writers to weave the three shows into a grand, epic narrative. The resulting story followed three generations living through a mass alien invasion. The final arc would revolve around Robotech pilot Scott Bernard, who was sent back to Earth to organize resistance against the Invid. This time, the aliens were not after a missing warship, but rather intended to harvest Earth's bio-energy in the form of Protoculture (a "Prototype Culture" derived from the Macross series) and enslave the remaining human population

Ann-Margret as "Ann Margrock" on The Flintstones | Behind the Scenes Photos | Cool Junk You Find On Facebook

The images come from the Vintage Los Angeles Facebook page , but unfortunately I can't provide photo credit. They show Ann-Margret performing as "Ann Margrock" on the animated sitcom The Flintstones. The show aired on ABC-TV for 6 seasons from 1960 to 1966. The photos capture Ann recording voice-overs with Alan Reed (the voice of Fred) and Jean Vander Pyl (the voice of Wilma) at the Hanna-Barbera studios in Los Angeles in 1963.

Retro TV Rewind: Wonder Woman (1976 - 1979) | Starring Lynda Carter

Image
Written By Ken Hulsey Lynda Carter will forever be remembered for her four-year run as the Amazonian goddess-turned-freedom fighter known as "Wonder Woman" on prime-time American television. The tall, buxom actress of Native American and Hispanic descent was the perfect fit to portray the character who first appeared in DC comics in the 1940s. As the former Miss World-USA 1973, Carter's presence on the show seemed destined for television success.

Pluto TV Launches New 24 Hour Universal Monsters Channel

Image
Many fans of classic horror movies may be surprised to find out that earlier this month Pluto TV launched a 24 hour Universal Monsters Channel. Unlike when the free streaming platform launched their 24 hour Godzilla movie channel, this time around their was little fanfare to promote the channel that features the entire catalog of Universal's horror and sci-fi movies and television programs. Universal Monsters is one of nine new channels on Pluto that includes a channel dedicated to The Lone Ranger and a Universal Crime Channel that is presently running a McMillan and Wife marathon. I hadn't seen that show since it aired in the 70s! From Pluto: Blood-sucking vampires, stitched-together monsters, and howling werewolves are guaranteed to give you goosebumps! A Binge Worthy Documentary Series - Age of Samurai Battle for Japan

Image
While scrolling through Netflix on Saturday, Terri and I stumbled upon the documentary series Age of Samurai Battle for Japan. Since we had been spending many of our weekend afternoons binging the films of the legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa we thought that it would be something that we would find interesting. From watching films like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai , we had some idea of how the warlords of Japan had fought bloody campaigns to take control of the country. Thanks to this really great documentary series we now understand the complex history of the Samurai and how their exploits inspired the works of Kurosawa that we both love so much.

America The Land We Live In - Explore America’s Hidden Treasures and National Wonders Through The Lens of a 19th-Century Travelogue

Image
Terri and I stumbled upon a really great travel show last night called America The Land We Live In. The show centers around two New Yorkers named Doc and Sophia who travel across the country trying to find locations that were featured in William Cullen Bryant's 19th century book Picturesque America. The premiere episode really pulled on Terri's heart strings a bit, because the first half of the episode was filmed in North Carolina.

From The Land of Forgotten Television - Planet of the Apes (1974)

Image
The Planet of the Apes franchise was immensely popular in the early 1970s, though many modern science fiction fans are unaware of its cultural impact. The original Planet of the Apes film spawned four sequels, two TV series, and a merchandising bonanza of dolls, playsets, and books. While Star Wars is often considered the first film to generate such an extensive toy craze, Planet of the Apes had produced a similar mania years earlier.

Star Trek - The Original Series Revisited

Image
Like many science fiction fans, I developed a lifelong love of the genre after being introduced to Star Trek as a child. My older cousin Rick, an avid fan himself, persuaded me to watch the show. The first episode I saw was “Arena,” which featured a fight between Captain Kirk and a Gorn captain orchestrated by an unseen alien race. As a young boy fascinated by dinosaurs, I was initially drawn in by the reptilian Gorn. However, it was the intelligent writing and compelling storylines that kept me coming back for more. The show's spirit of adventure and exploration matched my own longing to travel beyond my backyard. What six-year-old doesn't dream of piloting a starship across the vast expanse of space? After that first taste, I was hooked, becoming a devoted Trekkie and sci-fi enthusiast for life. Although the show had a loyal fan following during its initial prime-time run, Star Trek never achieved strong ratings. NBC, the network that aired it, frequently changed the show...

The Last Battlestar Galactica Leads a Rag Tag Fugitive Fleet on a Lonely Quest for a Shining Planet Known as...Earth

Image
Though it lasted only one season, Battlestar Galactica boasts a remarkably devoted fan base that has endured for decades. When it first aired in 1979, the series dubbed "Son of Star Wars" by Newsweek enthralled viewers with its epic space saga of a fleet on the run. Inspired by Mormon themes, Galactica offered imaginative stories, dazzling special effects, and talented acting that sparked the imaginations of its young audience. For those who grew up watching the show's original run, Galactica left an indelible imprint. Even though high production costs led to its cancellation after just one season, fans' dedication has not waned after 25 years off the air. Clearly, Galactica’s gripping drama and visionary sci-fi aesthetic struck a chord that continues to resonate with its loyal followers to this day.

Emer Kenny Talks About The Second Season Of 'The Curse' - Available Now On Britbox

Image
From Chanel 4 (UK): Congratulations on the birth of your son! Did you decide to have a baby when you read that Tash was pregnant? Yeah, me and Allan (Mustafa, playing Albert) really committed to our roles and have had a baby together… No, I was writing on the show this season, so I knew the whole time we were plotting it in the writer’s room that I was pregnant, but I was so nervous to tell them. I called them up one by one, which they all found really weird, because I'd never called them like that before. I asked if we could write it in and they were really excited. James (De Frond, director) was saying it could be really iconic, because you rarely get a woman filming while being pregnant, especially a lead character who's quite strong and interesting. I felt so lucky to able to do that.

Retro Saturday Morning - The Groovy Cartoons Of The 1970s!

Image
The Addams Family (1973-75)(NBC) The Addams Family is an American animated sitcom adaptation of the Charles Addams cartoons produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1973. Jackie Coogan and Ted Cassidy, who played Uncle Fester and Lurch respectively from the 1960s television series, returned in voice-over roles. The cast also included an 11-year-old Jodie Foster, who performed the voice of Pugsley Addams. The show's theme music was completely different and had no lyrics and no finger snapping, although it retained a bit of the four-note score from the live-action show.

A Must See Documentary - The American Buffalo by Ken Burns

Image
Watching this amazing documentary on PBS tonight. What majestic and spiritual creatures. I wonder why nobody cares about them or the Native Americans who relied on them for just about everything in life. We as a people need to rethink how we treat the proud indigenous people of this country. - Ken Hulsey  From PBS (Press Release) The American Buffalo, a new two-part, four-hour series, takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes, tracing the animal’s evolution, its significance to the Indigenous people and landscape of the Great Plains, its near extinction, and the efforts to bring the magnificent mammals back from the brink. For thousands of generations, buffalo (species bison bison) have evolved alongside Indigenous people who relied on them for food and shelter, and, in exchange for killing them, revered the animal. The stories of Native people anchor the series, including the Kiowa...

I am ordered to kill you and to proceed against the Halkans as the new captain of the Enterprise

About a decade ago I was in a comic book shop when I stumbled upon a folder with several photographs from the original Star Trek television series. The owner of the store told me that he acquired the images in the 90s as part of a collection of items that belonged to a man who worked for a production company that did work for the show. Included in that collection were also some props and episode scripts that were sold years prior, the photographs were all that remained.  I was eager to add these photos to my ever growing collection of memorabilia and the store owner just wanted to get rid of them. Luckily for me, no one had ever shown any interest in the photos so I was able to purchase them for next to nothing. Over the years I have speculated that the images, which were taken from actual episodes as opposed to being staged publicity shots, were probably used in the series of Star Trek Fotonovels that were published in the late 1970s.  Star Trek Fotonovels were a series...
