Pluto TV Launches New 24 Hour Universal Monsters Channel

Many fans of classic horror movies may be surprised to find out that earlier this month Pluto TV launched a 24 hour Universal Monsters Channel. Unlike when the free streaming platform launched their 24 hour Godzilla movie channel, this time around their was little fanfare to promote the channel that features the entire catalog of Universal's horror and sci-fi movies and television programs.

Universal Monsters is one of nine new channels on Pluto that includes a channel dedicated to The Lone Ranger and a Universal Crime Channel that is presently running a McMillan and Wife marathon.

I hadn't seen that show since it aired in the 70s!

From Pluto:

Blood-sucking vampires, stitched-together monsters, and howling werewolves are guaranteed to give you goosebumps! Classics including Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, and Phantom of the Opera

From The Monster Island News Archives - Rare Images From Classic and Not So Classic Horror Movies

As most of you know, I used to run the horror and sci fi themed blog Monster Island News from 2008 to 2020. During that time I amassed a gigantic collection of photos that were sent to me from all kinds of publicity outlets to use in articles about all sorts of horror and monster movies both past and present. Many of these images are rare, some are hard to find, and yet others are simply from obscure independent films that have been lost in the minutia of a movie industry that just keeps producing and endless amount of product year after year.

Rare Unpublished Life Magazine Photos of the Creature From The Black Lagoon

Back in November of 2008 Life Magazine dug up a batch of unpublished photos of Ben Chapman and Julie Adams from the 1954 Universal horror classic Creature From The Black Lagoon. These shots were taken on the back lot of Universal and feature Chapman in the 'publicity' version of the Creature costume and Adams in her famous white bathing suite that was featured in the film.

While the trio is out at a local carnival Gwen’s friend Jenny is attacked by what appears to be a wild animal. Talbot uses his new cane to fend of the creature, but gets bitten in the process. When the police arrive to investigate the attack they discover the dead body of a traveling gypsy. Talbot is questioned but cannot explain how he could have mistaken the young man for a wolf.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
