Hot Traxx: Top 20 Hits Of 2021

20. Alone - Fickle Friends

19. Waiting - Topps

18. Spies - Tori Amos

17. Tonight United - Duran Duran

16. Best In Show - Sedona

15. Landline - Little Boots

The second single off her forthcoming self-produced album, "Landline" sees Little Boots indulging in pure unadulterated disco nostalgia. Full of bright shimmery synths and bouncy basslines, Little Boots fondly reminisces about days spent holding up the family phone line and dancing to music with her boyfriend, drawing parallels to pandemic-era Zoom parties.

14. Six Days In June - The Fratellis

The song Six Days In June was actually released initially way back in June of 2020 in anticipation of the upcoming release of Half Drunk Under A Full Moon which because of the Covid 19 pandemic was pushed back to the Spring of 2021.

The Fratellis are a Scottish rock band from Glasgow, formed in 2005. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Jon Fratelli, bassist and backing vocalist Barry Fratelli, and drummer and backing vocalist Mince Fratelli. Their singles "Chelsea Dagger" and "Whistle for the Choir" were both top ten hits in the UK charts.

13. Slide Tackle - Japanese Breakfast

Japanese Breakfast is an indie rock band headed by Korean-American musician, director, and author Michelle Zauner. The band released its first studio album Psychopomp (2016) on Yellow K Records, followed by Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017) and Jubilee (2021), both on Dead Oceans.

12. Dino's - Gordi

Sophie Payten (born 28 December 1992), known professionally as Gordi, is an Australian folktronica singer/songwriter. Her music has been featured in various television series and films: her 2015 single "Can We Work It Out" featured in the seventh series of The Vampire Diaries, her 2017 single "Heaven I Know" featured in the tenth series of The Walking Dead, and her 2017 song "Something Like This" featured in the 2020 teen romantic comedy To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You.

11. Silver Balloons - Little Boots

“Silver Balloons is in many ways a metaphor for all the cancelled plans and parties of lockdown, all of the disappointments as one by one we watched many of our hopes and desires burst like shiny balloons at the end of the night. All we have left is each other; coming together and holding tight to hope is the way we have all seemed to get through the last couple of years.”

She goes on to say, “Sonically, I was listening to a lot of classic 70s songwriters during the making of this record while really putting the piano at the centre of everything, so you can hear echoes of Elton John, Carole King, The Bee Gees, even Wings. The piano and vocals in this track also really remind me of one of my all-time favourites Saint Etienne. I’m also especially proud of 100% writing and producing this record myself, and it being totally powered by my fans via their support on Patreon.” - Little Boots via Analoguetrash

10. Jealousy - Isabella Manfredi

Manfredi is just weeks away from the birth of her second child and has a new love in musician Rupert Izzi. Many would think that this would be a strange time to embark on a new solo career.

“I had never really co-written outside the four walls of The Preatures," a heavily pregnant Izzi told triple j. "I’d done a few tracks with Flume and that was kind of it. It was really scary and also super-exciting. I came out of it with such a love of the craft and a lot of confidence when I came back. I loved it.”

9. Cure For Me - Aurora

Speaking to NME about the track, the Norwegian singer-songwriter AURORA described it as “a very fun little guy” – despite it coming from a much darker place.

“Why is it so difficult for people to just let others be themselves? Then I thought that it could mean many other things. People tend to believe quite quickly that something is wrong with them if they’re not like the people they see in front of them. It’s so sad that it doesn’t take much for us to really doubt ourselves.”

8. So Sweet - Japanese Breakfast

7. Crying On My Own - Sedona

Brooklyn-based five-piece band Sedona is back with a stellar new single and accompanying music video for “Crying On My Own“ which starts with a beautiful flute that instantly transports us back into the woods of Twin Peaks. Front-woman (and namesake for the band) Sedona’s powerful, yet lush vocals slide against a dreamy and nostalgic production. The song has a strong nod to the 80s and we are absolutely loving it!

 6. Ride On Time - The Bamboos

“We locked ourselves up in this country house to record the new album. We were hanging out in a barn that we had designated as our late night “Rec Room”, listening to some ‘90s music as we often do, when “Ride On Time” came on. I’m pretty sure it was our bass player, Yuri Pavlinov, who mooted the idea - and then we literally ran back into the house/studio and started to work it out. It was really just some early-hours-of-the-morning fun, and now there is a video clip. Who knew!?” - Lance (The Bamboos)

5. Corde Sensible - Freedom Fry

"Corde Sensible” is the second track off our next album and is about finding your soul mate. The one person who can make you feel alive and experience emotions no one else can make you feel. - Freedom Fry

4. Need A Little Love - The Fratelies

“’Need A Little Love’ feels like the purest pop song we’ve ever written,” comments Jon Fratelli, the band’s lead singer and songwriter. “It’s the kind of song you don’t need to second guess or squint at and the whole story is pretty much contained in the opening few bars. It was written unashamedly from the twisted heart of a hopeful romantic.”

The video for ‘Need A Little Love’ was directed by David Eustace and shot at Leith Theatre in Edinburgh shortly before the first lockdown. Shooting in an empty venue turned out to be prophetic as, like all musicians, The Fratellis have only been able to play in empty venues ever since.

3. IRL - Fickle Friends

“IRL has such a great energy so we knew we wanted to create a performance video," says the band's lead vocalist Natti Shiner. “It feels like we are living in a virtual reality right now and we kinda wanted to mirror that idea with the illustrated parts of the set. Our bedrooms have become a safe haven in this time, a place to be creative and a space to reflect."

2. Hypotheticals - Lake Street  Drive

As a band, Lake Street Dive epitomizes democracy in action: the group, expanded into a quintet since touring keyboardist Akie Bermiss officially joined in 2017, share writing and arrangement duties. Their personalities, skills, and wide-ranging taste in pop, rock, R&B, and jazz have long blended together to make an impressively cohesive sound, both sophisticated and playful, combining retro influences with contemporary attitude. On its most recent Nonesuch album, 2018’s Free Yourself Up, the band even produced the record itself.

Obviously is titled after the first word in the lyrics of opening track “Hypotheticals.” And it is obvious from the start that the band has homed in on Elizondo’s hip-hop record- making expertise, because, on this material, the grooves run especially deep. A sense of rhythmic fun drives just about every track, from up-tempo numbers like “Hush Money” to a bittersweet slow dance like “Anymore.” The quintet fashions disarmingly cheerful arrangements guaranteed to keep the party going even as the subject matter takes a more serious turn on lead-off single, “Making Do,” about a younger generation facing a life of diminished expectations, and “Being a Woman,” a finger-snapping, bird-flipping treatise on gender inequality. “Nobody’s Stopping You Now” is a letter of encouragement from lead vocalist Rachael Price to her teenaged self, co-written with bassist Bridget Kearney. - Lake Street Drive

1. One Hit Wonder - Isabella Manfredi

Former Preatures vocalist Isabella Manfredi has released her second single as a solo artist, ‘One Hit Wonder’.

Manfredi explained how the song was written in March 2020 after feeling energized from a studio session with G Flip, JessB and Thandi Phoenix. By that time, The Preatures had been in limbo for a year and a half.

“I remember it feeling tongue-in-cheek at the time, like maybe it could be a Preatures song. But I was really saying I was done with the band before I was ready to admit it to myself,” she said in a statement.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
