Tonight while I was going through some of my files I stumbled upon a group of images of some lobby card and poster designs I created for my online store Atomic Robot Comics (previously View Obscura Comics). I used to sell prints of these in sizes from 8 x 10 inches to 24 x 36 inches. They actually sold quite well but when my family moved I couldn't find a local printer so that part of my business simply went away.
Recently I did find a new printing company but after a four year absence I found that there wasn't much of a market for these anymore so I never added them back to the store.
I had a lot of fun creating these and I chose some of my favorite movies as subject matter. On of my favorites is a Creature From The Black Lagoon lobby card that I created from some of the elements the original lobby set that Universal produced in 1954 combined with an publicity image I had. To add some style to the piece I included a green and black rendering of a photo that the late actor Ben Chapman sent me of him in the Creature costume. Together I think all the elements work really well together.
Here are some more of my creations:
Creature From The Black Lagoon
Vertigo
This is probably the most famous of my poster designs and I know for a fact that a print of this hangs on the wall of actor Lou Wagner who played Cornelius and Zira's nephew Lucius in the movie. You can see Wagner in costume standing in front of Roddy McDowall as Cornelius in the photo I used. A family member bought it for him and he sent me a note saying how much he loves it.
The Empire Strikes Back
This was my take on the classic Empire teaser poster that simple featured Darth Vader's head and shoulders on a star filled background. I know that Vader is the face of the empire but I wanted to give the troopers that do all the heavy lifting their due.
I was trying to create some kind of pop art statement with this alternate Empire Strikes Back poster. I saw Andy Warhol - but nobody else quite saw it that way.
Star Wars
The Bride of Frankenstein
Godzilla
Star Trek
An interesting note about this lobby card I made for the beloved Star Trek episode The Trouble With Tribbles is that when I put together all the elements the Desilu logo didn't quite match. I was tempted to try and fix it but when I looked back at other publicity material from the time imperfections like that were actually common so I decided it added character and a sense of realism to the piece so I just went with it.
Bettie Page
I'm aware that Bettie Page is a person and not a movie or TV show but I decided to make lobby cards for her anyway. This is one of a set of four that I created.
Rear Window
Here is another fun fact. You may believe that the image on the left is a publicity still from Rear Window but it actually isn't. It's a photo of James Stewart and Grace Kelly alright and there is a camera in the shot which kind of ties in with the theme of Rear Window but it is an unrelated photo. I thought that it really worked though.
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
I have to give credit to my wife Terri for reworking tis image of actress Tura Satana and her signature Porsche 356 sportscar. I just added the lettering.
