For the first of my Fantastic Photos From Fantasy Films features for 2023 I have a movie still from one of my favorite monster movies, the 1962 clash of the preverbal cinema giants, King Kong vs Godzilla. In the image we see Kazuo Fujita (Kenji Sahara) rescuing Fumiko Sakurai (Mie Hama) from the icy water as Godzilla approaches.
As is the case with many of these classic Japanese monster movie stills the image is a composite of several other images in this case the water rescue in the foreground in front of a scene of scared train passengers being evacuated by bus. To finish off the scene a mountain village was added and the cherry on top is good old Godzilla himself/
This is one of my favorites!
Original Japanese version. Tako, advertising director of Pacific Pharmaceuticals, is frustrated by the low viewership of their sponsored documentary show. Realizing that he needs a more sensationalist approach, Tako orders two of his men, Sakurai and Furue, on an expedition to Faro Island to investigate a legendary monster called King Kong and exploit it for advertising. Just as the expedition is underway, Godzilla emerges from an iceberg and sets his sights towards Japan. A media frenzy is generated that steals the publicity away from Tako's own monster. As Kong is captured and hauled back to Japan, people begin to wonder which monster is stronger and capable of beating the other. Tako realizes the marketability of King Kong facing off against Godzilla as the two monsters are pitted against each other in the biggest wrestling match of all time. - IMDB
As was the case with all of these cinema stills it was supposed to be displayed at a movie theater will King Kong vs Godzilla was be exhibited and then returned to the distributer along with the film.
Thankfully for us collectors many people simply kept them.
When I started this blog a couple of years ago I had planned once again to insert Fantastic Photos features into my rotation of posts. I started with a few posts in 2020 and then again with a few more in 2021. Despite my good intentions my plans always seemed to get pushed aside by other thoughts and ideas for articles.
Here in 2023 I have decided to get focused and actually do what I set out to do. I hope that you all enjoy these images.
