Rams Run Over Cardinals (Again) 37 - 14 As Kyren Williams Piles Up 204 Scrimmage Yards

Just before this years draft I noted that the Los Angeles Rams needed a star quality running back for Sean McVay's to truly work. It was my observation that during the early years of McVay's tenure with the team he relied heavily on Todd Gurley to balance out his offense. Defenses couldn't just simply focus on the passing game with the threat of such a running attack. Over the past few seasons, after Gurley suffered a career ending knee injury, the Rams offense had become predictable as McVay had become way too pass happy. The team tried in vein to find late round substitutes and trade candidates to replace Gurley's production on the ground.

I thought that the team needed to invest yet another draft pick to acquire the type of game changing rusher. Little did I know that the player I was talking about was already on the roster.

This season Kyren Williams has shown that the Rams got a steal when they selected him in the 5th round of the 2022 NFL draft. On Sunday in Arizona Williams exploded for 204 yards from scrimmage as the Rams routed the Cardinals 37 - 14. The second year back out of Notre Dame sliced up the Cardinal defense both on the ground and through the air showcasing his speed and elusiveness.

With both star receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua ailing coach McVay devised a game plan the leaned heavily on both of the teams runners, Williams and Royce Freeman, along with tight end Tyler Higbee and to a lesser extent speedy receiver Tutu Atwell. The plan worked almost flawlessly and the injury depleted Cardinals defense had little to no answers.

It was an afternoon where the Rams got back to the basics of what truly makes their offense click and it was certainly fun to watch.

From the Orange County Register:

The Rams’ offense had gone into quicksand the last four games. After averaging 367 yards and 23 points per game in the first six contests of the year, those numbers dropped to 272 and 14.25. A lot factors into numbers like that, including quarterback Matthew Stafford dealing with a thumb injury for part of that four-game drudge.

But the one common denominator for six games of success and four games of struggles was the availability of running back Kyren Williams. When the second-year back was healthy, the Rams had a balanced offense. When he was on injured reserve with an ankle sprain, they lost a dimension, and went 1-3 in the process.

Williams returned to action in Sunday’s 37-14 win over the Arizona Cardinals, and with him, the Rams (5-6) rediscovered some of their offensive mojo.

Thirty-seven was a season-high in points for the Rams offense. The 457 yards and 25 first downs were high marks for the team since Week 4.

And on a night in which receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua combined for 45 yards on seven catches, Williams was the straw that stirred the drink for the Rams to the tune of a career-high 204 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.

“What do you think?” head coach Sean McVay quipped when asked how Williams impacted the offense’s energy. “He’s one of those guys, he loves competing. And when you’ve got that natural just zest and enjoyment for going out there and playing the game … it’s a big difference and I think that you’ve seen that the last two times that he’s played.”

Arizona (1-5, 0-2) had no answer for a Los Angeles run game that ripped off 107 rushing yards in the third quarter alone en route to adding 10 points and gaining their first lead of the contest. Running back Kyren Williams was a big piece to that, rushing for 154 of his career-high 158 yards in the second half alone as the Rams outscored the Cardinals 20-0 in the second half. - READ MORE

Many Rams fans have forgotten about running back Wendell Tyler who carried the rock for the team from 1977 to 1982. When I first became a Rams fan in 1979 Tyler quickly became my favorite player. He could burst through the line for huge chunks of yardage like Todd Gurley and surprisingly he could catch spectacular passes in traffic like Odell Beckham Jr. - READ MORE

At this time the Rams organization probably realizes that their 2020 rebrand has been a dismal failure. Back when the new logos and uniforms were introduced almost all fans and former players, namely Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson, were very vocal about their strong dislike of the designs. - READ MORE

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
