Rams Reach Agreement with Matthew Stafford on Contract Adjustment

From The Los Angeles Rams By Stu Jackson

Rams head coach Sean McVay on Tuesday said the team worked out a contract adjustment with Matthew Stafford, and that the quarterback is at training camp.

McVay declined to go into specifics of the contract and contract discussions, other than confirming it wasn't an extension.

"There was a lot of great dialogue that existed between myself and Matthew, between (Stafford's agent) Jimmy Sexton, (Rams Vice President of Football & Business Administration) Tony Pastoors, (Rams President) Kevin (Demoff), (General Manager) Les (Snead), and ultimately it was all geared towards finding a solution that really suits our team, but also accommodates some of the things that represent Matthew's worth for us," McVay said. "And we feel like we were able to do that. That was always the goal in mind, and that's where we're at and we're excited about it."

McVay said Stafford let him know around free agency that Sexton would be reaching out to the team about getting his contract adjusted. In April, McVay acknowledged a report that Stafford wanted more guaranteed money on his contract. While that was ongoing, Stafford attended all OTA sessions and minicamp throughout the spring and summer.

"Obviously the uptick in the urgency ... in the last week, and particularly really the last 12 hours, is where there was an ability to feel like we're working towards a common ground that is going to be the solution that we all want," McVay said.

McVay said he was grateful that they were able to find a solution, as well as for the conversations throughout the process.

"Matthew and I have a relationship that I really value where we can have honest feedback, and there was some real conversations that existed that I think were really healthy for us to be able to move forward in the right direction," McVay said. "He was great. His group was great. And that was the goal. But I am relieved that it got done, and I think in the manner at which it occurred was healthy for everybody involved, and ultimately I'm excited for this team." - Source
