An old abandoned truck sits rusting away in the weeds in Ferriday.
Over the past few months I have been taking a ton of photographs as I travel all over Louisiana. I have been wanting to share these images for some time, but I just couldn't make up my mind on just which ones I wanted to do individual posts about. As I perused all the images that I amassed it became clear that it would be way to time consuming to share them this way. Instead I took the time to weed through them and pick out the ones that really spoke to me and conveyed what I believe to be the essence of what summertime here in Louisiana really looks like.
I hope that these photos tell the true story of what Louisiana looks like, visually. If you look close enough, you may see other things that tell a different type of story. Louisiana is filled with all kind of visuals that showcase the true beauty of God's creation alongside relics of a once vibrant history that have been left to decay in the harsh elements. These are very stark contrasts indeed and a constant reminder that no matter what mankind can create, eventually nature will reduce it to dust.
Unfortunately, Louisiana is a state where poverty is very prominent. It's honestly hard to tell if this home in Haughton is abandoned or occupied. Sometimes you come upon a residence that you believe to be vacant, only to find people living in it.
At one time there were numerous minor league baseball teams here in Louisiana. Today that number is a mere three fledgling teams that belong to the Texas Collegiate League. On this hazy Friday night the Acadiana Cane Cutters played their final regular season game a squeaked out a narrow victory over the Sequin River Monsters (Texas) to earn a spot in the playoffs.
If you travel around the northeastern part of the state you will spot three metal crosses in random cornfields. In this part of the world, faith is still important to people.
In the summertime the weather can change rather quickly. Here aa amanous storm is forming over the farmland off Highway 65 just north of the town of Waterproof. This location is just a stones throw from the Mississippi River.
Speaking of the Mississippi River, you can get a rather nice view of it from the Vidalia Landing & Riverview Park in Vidalia. In the distance you can see the Natchez-Vidalia Bridge that connects the two towns.
Not very far from Vidalia is the town of Ferriday where there is a group of old school buses that are almost completely engulfed by the vegetation.
This lonely, but peaceful, road is not open to the public, and is on property owned by the town of Jonesville. My travels take me on many such roads that most people never see.
One of the most beautiful places in Louisiana is the eastern shore of the Toledo Bend Reservoir. This massive man-made lake is located on the Texas / Louisiana border. There is a rather nice park here with a playground and a monument that tells about the history of the reservoir.
This rather spectacular formation of clouds occurred in the skies over Alexandra. The storm that followed dumped several inches of much needed rain in the area.
Several American flags adorn the old State Road 124 Bridge over the Little River in Jonesville in honor of Independence Day.
This basketball court on the grounds of the now abandoned Catahoula Head Start hasn't seen any action in quite some time.
This discarded set of living room furniture sits just off the road in Midway,
This old car sits rusting away outside an old repair shop in Midway.
A set of abandoned Kansas City Southern railroad tracks in Dry Prong.
Mother Nature is slowly overtaking this abandoned house in Colfax.
The sun rises over downtown Colfax.
This mural painted on the wall of the old city hall in Sunset proclaims that the town is the "Rub Board Capitol of the World."
I have often wondered what would Scooby do? This awesome van in Slidell has been painted in an homage to the 'Mystery Machine' from the cartoon series Scooby-Doo. Unfortunately I couldn't convince the owner to sell it to me. Wouldn't you just love to be cruising around the country in this bad boy!
Summer thunderstorms forming over the farms of southeastern Louisiana.
I have been passing by this old Missouri Pacific Railroad water tower in Grayson for years before I finally pulled over and took some pictures of it.
A fishing camp on Clear Lake.
Plenty of seating available in front of this old store in Bonita.

An island in the Red River as seen from the Fort Bulow Recreation Area in Pineville.
The old neon sign that once attracted hungry patrons to the now abandoned Carl's Catfish Hut on State Road 113 east of Glenmora. I would have been great to see this sign lit up.
Best friends at a farm near Elizabeth.
An abandoned barn on the outskirts of Elizabeth.
Whirling clouds of England Air Park in Alexandria.
There is an amazing exhibit of vintage fighter plans that once served the famous 'Flying Tigers' at England Air Park in Alexandria.
On the eastern outskirts of Leesville is an area that the locals call Froggy Bottom. It's a quiet place that you might miss due to the fact that it's street sign is almost covered in vegetation.
Leftover structures from the once prosperous cotton industry in Alexandria.
An old fence on the shore of Indian Creek Reservoir near Woodworth.
The yard is kept up, but the house needs some work. This abandoned residence is just outside Bonita.
Early summer rains brought flooding to Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville.
A rather wicked looking pair of trees on the banks of the Red River at the Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville.
