Last week I decided to pull off the highway on my trip from New Orleans to Slidell and check out the south shore area of Lake Pontchartrain. Right before you enter the Twin Span Bridge that crosses the lake there is an opportunity to exit onto Highway 11 in an area known as Irish Bayou. The area is populated by a lot of fishing camps, most of them abandoned, and relics of old docks. The area reminded me a lot of the Salton Sea area of Southern California with its old boats and abandoned buildings. You could tell that the area was once prosperous, but decades of hurricanes and storms had left the area broken a battered. There are a few hearty souls still holding on, but once they are gone, I doubt that anyone would want to settle here.Fodor's New Orleans (Full-color Travel Guide) Paperback - $12.99 @ Amazon.com - Order Here
I discovered that once you merge back onto Interstate 10 there is a spot where you can quickly pull over and get a good view of Lake Pontchartrain. I have wanted to take some pictures of the lake for some time, but I was hesitant to pull over on the bridge to take some shots. This spot was located just before the merge onto the highway so it provided me a safe zone to be able to back onto the road.
The lake itself is nothing short of spectacular. You can look as far as the eye can see and not spot the shore on the other side. If there was a tide, I could have convinced myself that I was looking at the ocean. There were a lot of people out enjoying the water as many boats went zipping across the lake. In spite of that the scene was very calm and serene. If I had more time, and it wasn't pushing a hundred degrees, I probably would have taken more time to relax and enjoy the view.
