Gibsland Louisiana was quiet little town in north central Louisiana in 1934. Nothing much had ever happened there, until two of America's most notorious outlaws, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow stopped in for breakfast. Unbeknownst to the two infamous outlaws, this would be their last meal, because just south a town a posse of Texas and Louisiana lawman had set up an ambush that would ultimately end their two year spree of killings and robberies with a barrage of bullets.
This past week I just happened to end up in Gibsland on business and I had a good hour to kill so I decided to check out the Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum. A couple of years ago I drove by the actual location where the ambush took place and I was actually very disappointed that there wasn't much of monument, so I had low expectations on what I would find inside.
Bonnie and Clyde: The Making of a Legend Hardcover – Illustrated - $14.99 @ Amazon.com - Order HereMuch to my surprise the Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum was a real hoot. Inside these walls was everything, and I mean everything relating to these notorious criminals from actual items owned by the pair to every magazine article ever written about them. It's a vast collection where true crime meets pop culture. When it comes to Bonnie and Clyde it's hard to sort out fact from fiction, but through these exhibits you can learn everything about this notorious duo from there early days to that fateful day south of town. I was rather impressed by the museums collection of rare photographs that I doubt anyone has ever seen before.
Heck, you can even sit around with a bunch of other Bonnie and Clyde enthusiasts and watch a documentary about your favorite outlaw couple.
There is nothing like bonding with others while learning about a murderous crime spree.
If you are a fan of the numerous movies made about the pair you won't be disappointed, because there is one room of the museum filled with memorabilia from those films, especially the 1967 one with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
There is a little something for everyone here.
The Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum is located at 2419 Main St in Gibsland. It is open from 9am to 5pm, seven days a week. The price of admission is $10 a person.
