I was looking through my comic book collection last night and paused to look over the cover of Jumbo Comics 74 from way back in April of 1945. At first glance you might not think very much about the action taking place here. It was typical for pulp magazines published at the time to feature women dressing in outfits that would have gotten them arrested if they wore out on the town. Also common were scenes of people fighting off savage creatures, in this case it's lion. Stories that took place in exotic locations were popular as well. Most stories took place in Africa, South America or in the Far East. What really flips the script here is the fact that it is the heroine Sheena (Queen of the Jungle) is the one coming to the rescue of a handsome and muscular male character. From terrororstralis.com Sol Lesser, who produced seventeen Tarzan films between 1933 and 1958, had plans to produce a Sheena film as early as 1952, according to entertainment gossip in Quick magazine in September of that year. That project never came to fruition unfortunately, but plans to produce a Sheena movie didn't die. Somehow the Nassour Brothers acquired the rights to the Sheena film property but they eventually changed their minds and decided to make a television series instead. Twenty six episodes of Sheena Queen of the Jungle were filmed on a shoestring budget in the jungles of Mexico over a seven and a half month period in late 1955 and early 1956. The series was a joint production by Rodriguez Productions in Mexico and Nassour Studios, an American company run by two brothers.
