Photos and Story By Ken Hulsey
Back in November, I had the chance to revisit one of my favorite spots in Louisiana - Capitol City Park in Baton Rouge. I used to spend many a lunch break strolling the peaceful grounds when I worked in the city for several years. The park's quiet, serene atmosphere provided a welcome escape from the hectic pace of the office.
Despite its prime location next to the capitol building, the park was surprisingly rarely crowded, with only a handful of visitors. Returning to the park was a true delight - I always took joy in climbing the Indian mound to admire the Revolutionary War cannons overlooking the lake. As a Westerner now living in the South, I found it fascinating to be able to touch and even sit on these historical relics from our nation's past wars.
My visits to Capitol City Park were always a calm, reflective experience, providing a much-needed respite from the daily grind. I can only hope that more of our state's politicians would take the time to clear their heads in this tranquil setting - maybe they'd even come up with an idea or two to actually help Louisiana for a change. Wouldn't that be something?
