Story and Photos By Ken Hulsey
Over the past couple of years, I've reviewed various pizza, burger, and Mexican food restaurants, both fancy and fast-food. Today, I'm excited to rave about one of the coolest food establishments I've ever stepped into: Cajun Saucer Pizza.
This joint boasts some of the most eclectic decor this side of a filling station on the intergalactic space route from Jupiter to Magrathea. While I do intend to discuss the food, I'll actually spend the bulk of this piece talking about the wall coverings, tiki gods, and - most notably - the lighting fixtures. If there was ever a pizza palace that looked like it was decorated by yours truly, it would be Cajun Saucer.
From the hip artwork and Bender statue to the pop culture-inspired decorations and surf music playing over the sound system, this place is the man cave I never knew I wanted, nay, needed in the worst way.
Cajun Saucer Pizza is a thrilling, pop culture-inspired restaurant that offers much more than just great ambiance. The menu features "Stellar Pizzas," "Soylent Greens," "Unidentified Flat Objects," and an array of creative cocktails and beers - all named after classic sci-fi movies and Hitchcock flicks. I opted for a saucy Thai Curry Pie, a unique fusion of spicy marinara and curry, topped with chicken, cheese, and a surprising addition of white rice that somehow worked perfectly. Washed down with a pint of the excellent LA 31 Biere Pale Ale from the adjacent Bayou Teche Brewing, this was a truly delicious and memorable meal. While good pizza and beer can be hard to come by in this part of the state, the Cajun Saucer is well worth the drive.
The moment I stepped into Cajun Saucer, my senses were overwhelmed. Paintings of Sea Monkeys, Elvis, and ten-eyed monsters covered the walls, while glowing tiki lamps and light fixtures shaped like Borg Cubes and classic rock album covers created an other-worldly ambiance. A life-sized statue of Bender from Futurama added to the eclectic decor. For a moment, I wondered if I had somehow been transported to a hip beach locale in Hawaii or California, rather than a place in southern Louisiana. The eclectic, California-esque aesthetic was so unexpected that it took my mind a moment to reconcile the reality – that I was indeed still in Louisiana. I couldn't help but love every inch of this delightfully quirky establishment.
On a whim, I jokingly asked the cashier when I could move in, but she simply looked puzzled and walked away without responding. While I should have been disappointed by her reaction, the commute to work would have been unreasonably long, so it was likely for the best.
As I sat at my table, taking in the visuals around me, I noticed that the light fixtures had an array of pop-culture themes that I initially overlooked. There was a Jimi Hendrix-inspired fixture, one that drew from the movie Jaws, and others featuring the Alien franchise, the bands RUSH (a personal favorite) and Led Zeppelin, The Blues Brothers and Frank Sinatra, Star Wars, and even classic movie monsters like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, Rodan, and characters from the Gamera films. I couldn't help but wonder - who designs these unique light fixtures, and where can I purchase them? I was intrigued and eager to learn more.
