Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures both confirmed this week that a sequel to their 2021 hit Godzilla vs Kong was in production. The news came on the heals of several websites reporting that latest installment of the Monsterverse franchise was to be a Kong only feature.
Warner Bros stated in a press release:
Coming off the global success of 2021’s “Godzilla vs Kong” cameras are now rolling on the latest entry in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse. This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.Once again, Wingard is collaborating with director of photography Ben Seresin (“Godzilla vs. Kong” “World War Z”), production designer Tom Hammock (“Godzilla vs. Kong” “X” “The Guest”), editor Josh Schaeffer (“Godzilla vs. Kong” “Molly’s Game”), and composer Tom Holkenborg (“Godzilla vs. Kong” “Mad Max: Fury Road”), who are now joined by costume designer Emily Seresin (“The Invisible Man” “Top of the Lake”), makeup artist Sabrina Wilson (“Captain Marvel” “The Suicide Squad” “The Book of Bobba Fett”), hairstylist Gloria Pasqua Casny (“The Tomorrow War” “Ford vs Ferrari”), and VFX supervisor Alessandro Ongaro (“The Adam Project” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”).
Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is slated for a March 15, 2024, worldwide release from Warner Bros. Pictures except in Japan where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd and in mainland China where it will be distributed by Legendary East.
The rumor that the movie was to be a Kong only sequel was spawned by this statement released by the Australian government that surfaced this week:
“The fifth film in the Monsterverse franchise will see Kong defend the Earth from the unusual and dangerous creatures that threaten his new home.”
As you can imagine the rumor train has already left the station in regards to what, if any, new monsters from the classic Toho Godzilla series will appear in this film. These range from Godzilla's famed nemesis from the 1970s Gigan to two of the monster's most famous allies Anguirus (who had a hard to spot cameo in 2019s Godzilla: King of the Monsters) and King Caesar.
