Louisiana Through My Lens - Abandoned Bridge just outside Breaux Bridge

If you have ever traveled East on the I-10 Freeway from Lafayette towards Baton Rouge odds are you missed seeing this old abandoned bridge. Located just off the Southern side of the highway on the outskirts of the town of Breaux Bridge and just before you reach the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge is this forgotten landmark.

If you didn't know it was there you would never notice it. I have traveled this section of highway five times a week for two years and I just recently noticed it.

I tried to find some history about it online without any luck. The look of the bridge would seem to indicate that it was once a railroad trestle, but there is no information to support it. The bridge sits at the end of  Old Henderson Drive, but a review of the area via Google Maps doesn't show that the road ever continued on the other side. Then again, the vegetation could have reclaimed any road that once existed there in the decades since the bridge was abandoned.

I'm sure that some local resident will see this post and fill in the blanks for us.
