A Tibetan Yeti Mask is one of the unique treasure you will find at the Old Schoolhouse Antique Mall in Washington |
If you have a desire to acquire some unique treasures to spice up your house look no further than the many wonderful antique stores that reside in south central part of the Pelican State.
First Stop: Old Schoolhouse Antique Mall in Washington, Louisiana
If you are traveling south on the I-49 Freeway this will be your first stop.
You’ll find the Old Schoolhouse Antique Mall located in Washington, just north of Opelousas. As the name might suggest, the building originally was a schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was build in 1934 and was the original Washington High School. You’ll definitely see the remnants of the school; each classroom has been converted to provide vendors with a space to sell their items. Each room features something different, so you'll want to take your time going through each vendor's section. From antique furniture sets to vintage glass bottles, there are so many treasures you'll want to bring home. In addition to the schoolhouse, there's even more shopping to do in the old gym. You'll also find a charming little cafe within the gym, perfect for fueling up in between shopping sessions.
Twice a year, the Schoolhouse takes to the yard for a huge Antique Fair and Yard Sale, including over 200 vendors sprawled out across the six-acre property. The next one is scheduled for October 8-10, 2021, so mark your calendars! You don't want to miss this one-of-a-kind event.
Be sure to give the shop a follow on Facebook so you never miss out on any of the latest inventory being brought in, as well as their annual yard sales. - Only In Your State
Address: Washington Old Schoolhouse, 123 S Church St, Washington, LA 70589, USA

Second Stop: Spotted Cat Antiques in Opelousas, Louisiana
If you continue south on the highway from Washington you will quickly come upon the town of Opelousas and our second stop Spotted Cat Antiques. It's a really nice store with a good mixture of actual antiques and what my wife and I refer to as pho-tiques, those being newer items that look old.
Here is some info from their website:
Our Antique and Vintage Market is conveniently located off I-49, Exit 18, in Opelousas, Louisiana. We have over 30,000 square feet of Climate Controlled Shopping with 100 plus vendors and an architectural warehouse!
We provide our customers with a large selection of antiques and vintage items along with specialty vendors such a musical instrument booth, stain glass booth, religious booth and metal art booth.
We are also a Dixie Belle Paint Retailer, Sophia Oil and Lamps Retailer, and a Kramer's Best Antique Restorer Retailer.
We're changing the way folks view "old stuff". They are realizing old is better when it comes to almost everything. Buying a Vintage or Antique dresser or bed is money well spent. Quality is better than quantity.
And with Pinterest and other repurposing websites, you are sure to find what you need for that repurposing project at the Spotted Cat.
Come Join the Fun and spend some time with us. The atmosphere is great and our music will have you singing and dancing down the aisles.
Come on in and relive some sweet memories with the sights and sounds of yesteryear.
COME SEE WHAT THE CAT DRUG IN!
I guess that you can't blame people for writing a glowing review of their own store.

If you are hungry at this point I recommend eating at Jimmy John's across the street from Spotted Cat. My wife both enjoyed our sandwiches and they were prepared really quickly.
From here we are going to travel South again to the town of Sunset where the final cluster of antique stores all reside.
Here is a travel tip: Creswell street is really busy so to save yourself some stress, if you are leaving from Spotted Cat take a right on Creswell heading West, then turn left at the first right and follow Union Street down into Sunset. Likewise if you took my advice and ate some sandwiches then turn right out of Jimmy John's and head East back to the 49 and head South. You will want to use the exit for State Road 93 Duffy Avenue and do everything I'm about to list backwards.
We went down Union so....
Third Stop: Sunset Rail Stop Flea Market in Sunset, Louisiana
My wife loves this place! She always remarks about seeing all the brightly colored mid-century kitchen ware and how it always puts her in a joyful mood. Needless to say we have brought a lot of this stuff home and it has made my little lady a happy camper.
Sunset Rail Stop Flea Market is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. and is located at 312 Anna St, Sunset, LA 70584
Fourth Stop: Sunset Antique Market in Sunset, Louisiana
Here is another tip: these two shops are in old metal buildings with no air conditioning so shopping here in the Summer months can be challenging with the Louisiana heat and humidity. Bring some water with you to prevent dehydration which can set in very quickly!
These shops might be hot, dusty and somewhat disorganized, but there a treasures to be found if you look hard enough.

(337) 212-2091Fifth Stop: The Funky Flea in Sunset, Louisiana
Now we have come to my personal favorite shop on our tour!
The Funky Flea is a true bit of virtual time travel. Everything in this small retro flea market is a trip back to the 1960s and early 70s. When I say everything, I mean everything. There is the furniture, the artwork, the stacks of vintage vinyl records by The Stones and Led Zeppelin along with clothes that are all so mod.

Sixth Stop: Remember When Antiques in Sunset, Louisiana
Now we come to our sixth and final stop in Sunset at Remember When Antiques. Right off the bat I need to point out that only half of this shop has air conditioning so as was the case with the Sunset Antique Market you need to be prepared for the heat and humidity here in the Summer months.
That being said Remember When has an amazing collection of old signs, records, toys and other novelties. It's the perfect place to come and search through to find the perfect items to outfit a man cave.
If you want to have some fun go upstairs and check out their Mid-Century Room. Just like the Funky Flea it's a real trip back in time to when things were real groovy.
