The Melting Pot - Houston Texas - Bring A Hefty Appetite and Plenty of Cheddar (Pun Intended)

This past weekend our family traveled to Houston for the weekend to take in some sites and attend the Dolphins / Texans football game. Our daughter had just finished her degree so there was some celebrating to be done. Our daughter could have chosen any restaurant she wanted and she chose The Melting Pot.

The Ultimate Fondue Cookbook: 1200 Days of Delicious & Creamy Recipes for Any Occasion - $14.99 @ Amazon.com

There are few times in ones life that you get a chance to eat like a Roman Senator or King Henry the 8th and Friday night was my chance. Indeed to get the full experience of The Melting Pot you need to be in for the long haul because what you are about to partake in is a full four-course meal.

It's not something that is for the weak of stomach that's for sure.

Let's break down my experience round by round.

Round One - Choose a Cheese Fondue to dip veggies, chips and bread in.

My choice - Fiesta: Aged Cheddar, Emmenthaler, Lager Beer, House made Salsa and Jalapeño.

It's like an ultimate version of nachos.

Honestly I should have stopped here, but there is much, much more.

Round Two - Salads

Most meals start with this but not at The Melting Pot.

My choice - Caesar: Romaine, Parmesan, Croutons. Caesar Dressing and Parmesan-Dusted Pine Nuts.

Honestly this was the best Caesar Salad that I have ever had.

Round Three - The meat and veggies marathon round.

Loosen your belt people!

My choice - Pacific Rim: Shrimp, Teriyaki-Marinated Steak, Chicken Potstickers, Sesame-Crusted Ahi Tuna and Duck Breast.

Cooked in - Coq Au Vin: Burgundy Wine, Mushrooms, Scallions and Garlic.

Please remember that this is a fondue restaurant so we all spent the next two hours cooking the featured meat in the broth one or two items at a time. It's a meat marathon for sure.

After this I kinda went into some sort of coma where I may have been sucking my thumb in public.

But wait, there's more!

Round Four - The sugar coma round.

Honestly, if you didn't stop by this point, you need to rethink your life choices and get some sort of gastral surgery - probably, I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV.

My choice (honestly I can't remember, but my wife says I chose) - Bananas Foster: The buttery flavor of white chocolate is melted with bananas and dulce de leche then flambéed.

To tell the truth I'm a diabetic so I opted out of this round, which was probably a very wise choice because I was mumbling and clutching my granddaughters stuffed dog at this point.

Wow! What a meal!

I may have poked a lot of fun in this article but the truth is that I had an amazing meal at The Melting Pot and I highly recommend eating here. The food really is top notch, the service was incredible and the ambiance was wonderful.

My recommendation is that if you want to eat here you need to eat lightly during the day because you want to enjoy all four courses. I also have to mention that this is a rather pricey meal so don't freak out when the check arrives. Our meal started at $110 for two.

If you want to eat like a king you will have to pay a king's ransom for it.

Looking For A Great Place To Eat? - Try Pedro's Tacos & Tequila in Alexandria, LA

Now I always want to mention the fact that I am true red blooded Mexican Food snob. It takes a truly great plate of south of the border grub to make me want to stamp my official label of worthiness upon it. I grew up dining on some of the best Mexican Food restaurants in the western states of New Mexico, Colorado and California. Now that being said, the couple of meals that I have enjoyed at Pedro's have been the best in this part of the country by far. - READ MORE

Sweet Treats and Good Eats - Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe in Lafayette, Louisiana

However this past Saturday the wife and I had our young granddaughter along with us, which gave us all the excuse we needed to pop on in. What we found inside was a treat as sweat as the ice cream itself. The location is a perfectly preserved and functioning 40s style ice cream parlor that serves what is in my opinion the best ice cream that I have ever tasted. - READ MORE

Some West Coast Flavor: Flame Broiler

One of the best fast food chains on the west coast is a little gem called Flame Broiler. They market themselves as the healthy alternative to burgers and fried chicken. Their culinary offerings are actually quite healthy and rather simple yet delicious. You take a bowl of either brown or white rice, add either beef, chicken or tofu and top it off with mixed vegetables. Conceptually that may sound rather bland and boring but the real flavor comes from their signature sauces that range from mild to super spicy. Put it all together and you have a healthy yet flavorful meal. - READ MORE

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
