Story and Photos by Ken Hulsey
Last month, while driving from Beaumont, Texas to Lafayette, I stopped at the Explore Louisiana Welcome Center – a familiar pit stop where I had previously stretched my legs and used the facilities. However, this time, a co-worker's recommendation of a nearby nature trail piqued my interest. Though I had been to the center before, I had never ventured out to explore the spectacular swamp trail winding around the adjacent lake.
The trail, while not overly long, wound through some of Louisiana's most breathtaking wetlands, providing a quintessential glimpse into the state's natural beauty. As a visitor, I would highly recommend pulling over to experience this hidden gem. The elevated walkway offered the perfect vantage to soak in the serene, picture-postcard scenes – especially during my early morning visit when the heat and humidity were low, and the Spanish moss-draped trees were beautifully backlit by the rising sun. I was so captivated by the peaceful surroundings that I found it difficult to tear myself away.
