Wintertime can be very interesting in Southern California. Locals joke that it is the only place on Earth where you can surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon. As funny as that may sound to someone from anywhere else in the country it actually turns out to be true - if the weather cooperates. It was early February and as you can see from the photo above there is indeed snow atop the distant San Bernardino Mountains and it is highly likely that the ski resort at Big Bear was open for business on this day.
It may have been very wintery up in Big Bear on this February day but down where I enjoying myself at Anza Narrows Park it was a comfortable temperature somewhere in the high 70s.
In Southern California it is normally arid and dry but the months of December and January are normally the wet season and the result is that the plants and trees that will be crispy brown in July and August are nice and green as things start to warm up in February.
On this day the grass and trees were indeed green and some of the trees were also covered in pretty white flowers. I was captivated by just how beautiful these flowering trees where in the bright midday sun. I couldn't help but focus my camera upward and try to capture just how lovely a scene it was.
If you look real close in the fourth photo you can see some of the white petals being carried of in the breeze.
I have to admit that I know a little bit about horticulture but I don't know what kind of trees these are so if just happen to recognize what these are send me a message because I would like to know.
I know that it seems weird that I could have enjoyed Spring like conditions with flowering trees down in Riverside and then jumped in my car and within an hour I could have been building a snowman up in the mountains.
That's how we roll in So Cal folks.
