I think that everyone is familiar with the famous spiritual poem Footprints or Footprints in the Sand as it is sometimes called.
One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."
He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you.
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
I was reminded of that poem as I looked upon a single set of footprints in the sand next to the waters of Lake Charles, Louisiana this morning. Sometimes we simply don't see the extra set of tracks in the sand next to us as Jesus walks with us through this journey of life. Sometimes He is indeed carrying us as we go through the most difficult of times and sometimes it seems that He isn't there at all.
That is when our faith is really tested.
In the moments when we can't see the physical manifestations of His presence and we can't feel the comforts of His embrace we must rely on enduring faith to understand that even though we may not think He is there, He is. Sometimes Jesus is at work behind the scenes and in other times He has gone before us to clear our path. Regardless of the situation Jesus is always working on our behalf.
Tonight during our time of devotion and bible study I read 1 Peter aloud.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
To have a personal relationship with Jesus is know that He is always there. In that we can always trust and believe.
