"If I Had More, I'd Be Happier" ➝ Bad Mindset

Have you ever listened to a sermon and felt like the pastor was speaking directly to you? Have you ever felt like God was trying to tell you something? I had an experience just like that a couple of years ago when I listened to this sermon by Pastor Steve Smothermon of Legacy Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico on YouTube.

When Pastor Smothermon talked about his own life experiences about being unhappy with being a pastor in Roswell (NM) and complaining about it constantly I drew a parallel to my own life situation living here in Louisiana. Just like him I found myself complaining about life here in the Pelican State and desperately wanting to be somewhere else.

When I took a deeper look at it I discovered that my unhappiness wasn't routed in my dissatisfaction with my present local. Pastor Smothermon's life journey took him from being a UPS diver in Tulsa to Bible College, then to being a pastor in Roswell, to eventually being pastor at Legacy. He complained and wanted more at every stop.

Likewise my life journey went from Albuquerque where I was unhappy and wanted more, to California where I complained about the politics and cost of living to here in Louisiana where life simply isn't my cup of tea.

To paraphrase Pastor Smothermon - "The grass is always greener across the street, but when you get there you complain about having to mow it."

The truth is when you move from place to place you take you and your bad attitude with you. To put it more simply the problem isn't your location it's your mindset. I had to understand that if I indeed got my wish and my family and I moved to another state I would still be unhappy because I would find things to gripe about there too.

There is another level to this. It has to do with being grateful for what you have. Through my move from California to Louisiana the Lord has taught me that powerful lesson. I was in California with everything I could have wanted. Great weather, beautiful scenery and more fun places to visit than you can shake a stick at. I had all that but I was unhappy and more importantly I wasn't grateful for what I had.

How was it that Pastor Smothermon was able to move forward in life and eventually get what he wanted in a prospering mega church. At each point he had to stop complaining about his situation, submit himself to the will of God and do the best with what the Lord had given him. When he did these things God opened the door for him to move forward. What God taught Pastor Smothermon was that it was his mindset that was holding him back and preventing him from having joy in his life.

The message can change your life!

We tend to hate testing and spiritual exercise that will strengthen our faith and make us stronger. If you can’t surrender with whatever you have right now, even if you get more, the situation won't change.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
