In 2022, I published an article featuring my top 20 favorite restaurants across the USA. This year, I've expanded that list to 50 establishments, spanning burger joints, pizza places, Mexican eateries, sushi bars, upscale steakhouses, and hidden gems from California to New Jersey.

As a long-time resident of California, Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana, the majority of the restaurants on my list are located within those states. I hope this comprehensive guide will prove useful for any travelers seeking a delicious meal, whether they're looking for an affordable bite or an upscale dining experience.

When I mention green chile cheeseburgers and breakfast burritos, you know I'm talking about Blake's Lottaburger - a 100% New Mexico burger chain that's the real deal.

Bob's Big Boy - Burbank California 

Home to the first double-decker hamburger, this southern California institution is a local favorite. While the classic Big Boy Burger is unbeatable, I also enjoyed their Cincinnati-style spaghetti. Plus, they serve up a delicious breakfast menu.

Boudin Bakery - San Francisco California

Enjoying a delicious bowl of clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl while taking in the sights and sounds of Pier 39 in San Francisco is an unbeatable experience.

The Burger Barn - Olla Louisiana 

Whenever my wife and I travel to Monroe, we always make a stop at the Burger Barn. This small-town burger joint serves up some of the most delicious hamburgers you'll ever taste. There's just something special about soaking in that authentic Americana vibe at a place like this.

California Pizza Kitchen - Las Vegas Nevada

While California Pizza Kitchen is renowned for its specialty pizzas, I always opted for their Kung Pao Spaghetti, which was consistently delicious and had just the right amount of kick. And although it's a California-based chain, our family always relished our visits to the Las Vegas location.

Cajun Saucer Pizza - Arnaudville Louisiana

Cajun Saucer Pizza is the coolest spot around for handcrafted pizza and brews. Seriously, this place is out of this world - the walls and ceiling are packed with so much pop culture, you'll have a blast just taking it all in. Trust me, this is a must-visit joint!

Carl's Junior - Victorville California 

What sets Carl's Jr. apart from the typical fast-food burger joint is the quality of their product. You get a high-end, restaurant-quality burger at a fast-food price. Personally, I'm a big fan of their Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich - it has just the right amount of spice and flavor.

Carmine's Pizza - Netcong New Jersey 

Carmine's makes the most incredible pizza I've ever tasted. If you get the chance to visit, you have to order the Stuffed Pizza - it's a pizza with all of the ingredients on the inside that you dip into the most delicious marinara sauce. It's an absolute must-try and will leave you craving more!

Clearman's North Woods Inn - La Mirada California 

Clearma's is a laid-back spot to savor a juicy steak and baked potato. The food is consistently high-quality, and the casual atmosphere invites you to snack on complimentary peanuts and toss the shells right onto the floor - a little taste of the Yukon in Southern California.

The Cove Hawaiian Grill - Baton Rouge Louisiana

Imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered a Hawaiian restaurant right here in Louisiana! On one of our trips, we had to check it out, and it didn't disappoint. I had been craving chicken katsu, cabbage, and macaroni salad for years, so I was thrilled to find an authentic Hawaiian spot. It's no surprise the owner is a native Californian..

Del Taco - Victorville California 

It's no surprise that Del Taco was recently voted the top fast food chain in America. Their food is truly delicious, with a wide variety of tasty options - from classic tacos and burritos to burgers and fries. The quality of their menu puts the offerings at Taco Bell to shame. I highly recommend trying their ultimate Nachos. And be sure to take advantage of their Taco Tuesday deal, where tacos are sold at a discounted price. Overall, Del Taco is a fantastic choice for a satisfying and flavorful fast food experience.

Dion's Pizza - Albuquerque New Mexico 

Growing up in New Mexico, I was truly spoiled by the incredible pizza served at Dion's. Their pies are simply the best in the Southwest, and communities across Texas, Arizona, and Colorado are clamoring to get their own Dion's location. This homegrown New Mexican gem may just be the next big thing to come out of the Land of Enchantment.

Eloy's Mexican Restaraunt - Albuquerque New Mexico

When it comes to New Mexican cuisine, Eloy's holds a special place in my heart. It was within those walls that I was first introduced to it, shortly after we moved to Albuquerque. Eloy's set a high standard - the food there is simply amazing. They serve the best guacamole I've ever had, along with one of my all-time favorite burrito plates.

Farmer Boys - Victorville California 

Farmer Boys is a versatile restaurant where you can enjoy a wide variety of delicious dishes, from a classic plate of bacon and eggs to a juicy hamburger, a traditional BLT, a hearty salad, or down-home fried chicken. We often stopped in for breakfast or lunch after browsing the Victorville Flea Market. If you're craving comforting, homestyle cooking, Farmer Boys is the place for you.

Flame Broiler - Victorville California 

You can build your own bowl, starting with a base of brown or white rice, then adding your choice of beef, chicken, or tofu, and topping it off with fresh mixed veggies. While the concept may sound basic, the real flavor comes from their signature sauces that range from mild to super spicy. Put it all together, and you've got a nutritious and mouthwatering meal.

Flying Heart Brewing - Natchitoches Louisiana

My experience at Flying Heart was truly wonderful. For the main course, I chose the Carnitas Pizza by Jared - it was topped with Salsa Verde, Ranch, Mozzarella, Pork Carnitas, White Onions, Cilantro, and Chipotle Cheddar. This amazing fusion perfectly satisfied both my love of Mexican food and my love of pizza. I can't recommend it enough - it was absolutely delicious!

Garduno's Of Mexico - Albuquerque New Mexico 

With so many amazing Mexican restaurants in Albuquerque, you know a place must be truly special to stand out. Garduno's is one such standout, offering some of the best New Mexican cuisine around. In fact, they even had a location in Las Vegas that I frequented for years. And when I lived in Albuquerque, Garduno's was a longtime favorite of my family.

Hanabi Sushi - Victorville California 

Hanabi is the go-to sushi spot where we take our friends and family. The food is always delicious, with an impressive variety of rolls to satisfy any craving. If you're looking for both quality and selection, Hanabi is the perfect place.

The Hat - Brea California

The Hat is the place for you if you love oversized portions that would be a challenge for one person to finish. We're talking Flintstones-sized servings here - their basket of Chile Fries is so massive you could eat it with a shovel, and their pastrami sandwich is so huge it takes two people to carry it to the table. Sure, it might be a bit of an exaggeration, but The Hat definitely knows how to dish out hearty, comforting portions in abundance.

In-N-Out Burger - Victorville California 

Nobody should go through life without experiencing the delectable Double Double and Animal Style Fries from In-N-Out. The truth is, the food at this iconic fast-food chain is simply amazing! One of the charms of dining at In-N-Out is the refreshing simplicity of their menu. While the competition is constantly adding and removing various menu items, In-N-Out keeps it beautifully simple - just three types of burgers (Hamburger, Cheeseburger, and the legendary Double Double), classic fries, and a refreshing fountain drink. It's a straightforward yet delightful experience that every food lover should try at least once.

Islands - Pheonix Arizona

It bummed me out to hear that Islands had dwindled down to just two locations - both in Arizona. I used to frequent the spot in Brea, California, and their all-you-can-eat Tortilla Soup was always my go-to order. Islands has such a great Hawaiian vibe, with awesome burgers and tropical cocktails on the menu.

Jack in the Box - Victorville California

I have to be honest, the inclusion of Jack in the Box on this list rests solely on the strength of one menu item: their Crispy Tacos. Those marvelous fried delicacies are truly addictive! That's not to say the rest of their menu is terrible - quite the contrary. Their hamburgers, especially the Ultimate Cheeseburger, are really great. But those tacos are the real stars. Once you try them, you'll crave them from then on.

Jersey Mike's - Baton Rouge Louisiana 

I ordered the #13 "The Original Italian" with provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, and pepperoni on white bread. My wife got the #5 "Super Sub" with the same toppings. We both ordered our subs "Mike's Way" - that's with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, vinegar, oil, and spices. And to complete our Jersey Mike's meal, we each got a bag of Miss Vickie's kettle-style BBQ chips - a must-have side! Since we both got 6-inch subs, we split and shared both sandwiches.

The Melting Pot - Houston Texas

Last August, I had the rare opportunity to dine like a Roman senator or King Henry VIII at The Melting Pot. To fully experience this establishment, you need to settle in for a leisurely four-course meal. The food was top-notch, the service incredible, and the ambiance wonderful.

Monroe's Restaraunt - Albuquerque New Mexico 

We've finally arrived at my all-time favorite restaurant, Monroe's in Albuquerque. When I lived there, I was always so excited to dine here. And I'd be just as thrilled to eat here again today! I mean, what can I say? This place serves the absolute best Mexican food I've ever had. I'm crazy about their Stuffed Sopapilla plate, their posole, and their chips and salsa - heck, I love it all! I've gotta make it back to Albuquerque soon.

Pepe's - Brea California 

Get ready, guacamole lovers - Pepe's in Brea, California is the true king of this green goodness. You can smother just about anything in their fantastic guacamole. There's nothing quite like sinking your teeth into a taco overflowing with meat, cheese, and a generous dollop of their creamy, flavorful guac on top. It takes a bit of skill to avoid wearing it, but trust us, the delicious reward is worth the effort. Indulging in Pepe's guacamole is a pure joy.

Ray's Drive-In - Lufkin Texas

The food was absolutely delicious. The burger was hot and fresh, with perfectly melted cheese. The fries were fried to a crispy, golden-brown perfection. From the first bite, my wife was in heaven over her patty melt - someone had finally made her sandwich just the way she liked it. And the onion rings? The breading was light and flaky, just how she loves them. She cleaned her plate.

Royal India Bistro - Alexandria Louisiana 

I ordered the Chef's Special Chicken Curry and a side of Pesto Naan, and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious. I attacked that plate of curry and rice like a castaway who'd been surviving on nothing but coconuts for the past five years. I barely put my fork down, except to stuff my face with the fluffy, pesto-infused naan.

Rubio's Coastal Grill - Rancho Cucamonga California 

Rubio's famous Fish Taco Plate takes the taco to the next level, serving two of them alongside tortilla chips and a cup of no-fried pinto beans. And the amazing Salsa Bar offers a wide range of flavors, from mild to volcanic, for you to savor. Sometimes it's the simple things in life that are the most special, and the Baja Fish Taco is a prime example.

Schlitz and Giggles - Baton Rouge 

We absolutely love everything about Schlitz & Giggles - from having to park under the 10 freeway, to the awesome ambiance, and the delicious food. Of course, we didn't come just to listen to music or read old beer ads; we came for the great food, and Schlitz & Giggles delivered as always. My wife, a huge fan of New York-style thin-crust pizza, said the Big Pepperoni simply melted in her mouth. As for me, I wasn't in the mood for pizza, so I had the amazing K.C. Wrap with a side salad instead.

Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaraunt - Lafayette, Louisiana

The Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant, located in the downtown district of Lafayette, Louisiana, immediately catches the eye of passersby. This charming eatery is housed in a former gas station building. My wife raved about her delectable hamburger and fries, while I thoroughly enjoyed the scrumptious fish tacos. Honestly, we were quite delighted with the entire dining experience. The ambiance inside is just as retro and cool as the exterior.

Steer 'N Stein - Victorville California 

When my wife and I lived in Victorville, Steer 'N Stein was our go-to spot for a special dinner out. Nowhere else could you get a thick steak, giant baked potato, and a large beer for the same great value as Steer 'N Stein. It is the best steak place in the entire High Desert region.

Taco Treat  - Arcadia California 

The food at Taco Treat is an absolute guilty pleasure. Everything is deliciously deep-fried, from their mouthwatering fried burritos to the beef or bean and cheese fillings inside. Each bite is a pure delight. And don't forget to dip the burritos in their homemade salsa - it makes for possibly the best hole-in-the-wall fare in all of Los Angeles. Do yourself a favor and seek out this hidden gem!

Thai Basil - Fullerton California 

When I put together this list, I was surprised to see only one Thai restaurant included - though it is undoubtedly the best Thai food in Fullerton. Thai Basil was always one of my go-to spots when I lived in Orange County. I highly recommend trying their Kung Pao Chicken, paired with a refreshing Thai Iced Tea - it's a winning combination!

The Whole Enchilada - Placentia California 

When I lived in Fullerton, I dined at The Whole Enchilada almost weekly. Why wouldn't I? The food was delicious, and the restaurant was conveniently located just across the street. As I reminisce, I'm starting to crave those tasty taquitos and guacamole. Ah, the great memories!

Tommy's (Original) World Famous Hamburgers - Barstow California

For a truly authentic Los Angeles fast food experience, it's hard to beat Tommy's. The formula is simple: take a cheeseburger, hot dog, fries, or just about anything, and smother it in their delicious chili. Sure, it can get a little messy, but it's so worth it.

Yard House - Rancho Cucamonga California 

For a truly indulgent dining experience, look no further than Yard House. This upscale restaurant offers an impressive selection of steaks, pasta, chicken, and seafood dishes, as well as an array of tempting cocktails and mouthwatering desserts.

Yoshi Sushi - Victorville California 

Yoshi serves up the best Japanese fare in the High Desert, with great sushi at a fantastic price. I always savor the Spicy Tuna Hand Rolls, while my wife adores the crisp Tempura. For the truly famished, Yoshi offers an all-you-can-eat sushi option at a very reasonable rate - the perfect choice when you've worked up a serious appetite!
