Michael's Kitchen Restaurant & Bakery | A Taos New Mexico Landmark Since 1974

This one actually comes as a recommendation of my wife Terri who ate there with her sister and our daughter a couple of years back.

From Michael's Kitchen Taos

Considered one of the best restaurants in town, Michael’s Kitchen has been in business since 1974, and some original staff members remain. Owner Derek Apodaca says, “My wife Gina and I bought the restaurant in 2005. We once had a customer say that he had been here in the 70’s and was amazed that nothing had changed. He even had the same server wait on his table."

At Michael’s Kitchen everything is prepared from scratch. Fifty gallons of red and green chile is prepared every day. Derek went on to say, “On weekends we go through about 330 dozen eggs preparing our popular breakfast dishes including bacon and eggs, huevos rancheros, breakfast enchiladas and our Poor Man’s Eggs Benedict, smothered with red, green or veggie-green chile. All our home made pastries, English muffins, raisin, rye or wheat bread, cream puffs, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls are created in our downstairs bakery that produces up to 175 different items depending on the season.”

A favorite lunch dish is called the Belly Buster and is a burger with two patties, four strips of bacon, four slices of American cheese, avocado, diced green chile with lettuce, onions, pickles, tomatoes and French fries. Gina said, “We have more than 250 items on the menu and there’s only one thing in the kitchen that has a single purpose, and that’s the sauerkraut for our Reuben sandwiches. We also will serve most any meal at any time of day. We’re not a cookie-cutter or chain restaurant but a friendly family restaurant that aims to please. We’ll accommodate whatever our customers want — if we have it in the kitchen, we’ll make it for them.”

On a busy day the restaurant will serve up to 1,200 people and they can accommodate about 136 customers at a time. Customers come back often for the featured $7.95 Lunch Special which includes a drink from 11 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday. (Temporarily Unavailable.)

Favorites include an Indian Taco that is a flat sopapilla covered with beef or chicken, onions, and cheese, smothered in chile with rice and beans. It also comes with a sopapilla on the side. In addition they make delicious crunchy breaded chile rellenos, stuffed sopapillas and a build-it-yourself combination plate with anything in it your heart desires.

Local catering, gift certificates and shipping for many popular items are also available. Michael’s Kitchen Restaurant & Bakery is a legendary Taos icon with a traditional history of authentic northern New Mexico cuisine. It’s the place of choice for locals and tourists alike.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
