20. Eloy's New Mexican Restaurant (Albuquerque, New Mexico)
This venerable little eatery, in a strip mall on Wyoming north of Constitution, has been serving traditional New Mexican fare for years, and its refried beans are some of the best in Albuquerque, but don’t expect the grandeur of Garduño’s – this place is an under-the-radar family restaurant with simple, classic dishes.

I have to admit up front that even though the joint is named Taco Treat I have actually never had a taco from here. I know that sounds kinda crazy but let me explain. Yes the place has the name taco right up front, but this restaurant is known to locals for their fried burritos.
Now there are two types of these deep fried culinary delights. One is the bean and cheese and the other is the beef and cheese. Honestly you can't go wrong with either of them. Each one is a trip straight to Mexican Food Heaven. The joy doesn't end there however, there is a bonus in the form of cups of homemade hot sauce. Add a little bit of the stuff to each bite and the whole experience goes to another level.

The history of this building goes back to the late 1800s when a single-family house was constructed on what was then a four-acre parcel. The property changed hands and was enjoyed by several early Anaheim families.
Erma Hueneke and Les Highet, in1953 founded The Original Pancake House in Portland Oregon and quickly gained national acclaim for their menu. Their dairyman, Raymond Birkland, was a fan too. In 1958, after a major remodel, he and his wife, Anita brought the brand to Anaheim, California and lived in the apartment over the restaurant. He was known for his Cadillac car collection he kept in garages on site and his harsh treatment of his employees. His unwavering standards, however, and Anita’s gracious hospitality allowed the Original Pancake House to become an iconic Anaheim restaurant.

In 1936, Bob Wian sold his car for $300 and bought a ten-stool lunch stand called "The Pantry." He then changed the name to "Bob's Pantry."
One late night, a regular customer asked for something "different." Bob split the bun twice through the middle, creating a middle bun, added two burger patties and the rest is history. The "Double-Deck Hamburger" was invented.
But the name came from a chubby 6-year-old doing odd jobs at the time by the name of Richard Woodruff. One day Bob forgot his name and called out "Hey, Big Boy." Something clicked and a name was born: Bob's Big Boy.

Ruby’s Diner opened its doors December 7, 1982 on Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California. Ruby's Diner
Garduño’s Restaurants was founded in 1981 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, by Dave Garduño and his family. In the summer of 2011, a group of local investors created Southwest Brands which stepped in and saved this well-known New Mexico Brand, immediately setting its goals to re-establishing and expanding the once proud Garduño’s brand of the past. Each concept remains fresh and appealing through continual design, decor, and menu updates. At the same time, new concepts are evolving, and expansion is moving forward through a number of licensing agreements where the concept and great food can be shared with the rest of the country.
Creating a true Dining Experience through our themed restaurant along with the pairing of consistently high-quality food with exemplary customer service is the hallmark of Garduño’s Restaurants. The keys to success include adhering to a very strict hiring profile, a thorough training program prior to guest contact, and then holding all employees accountable to uncompromising standards. Employees are constantly reminded that “The Guest always comes first.”

Man meets fish taco. Man eats fish taco. Man falls in love with fish taco. Such was the case for Ralph Rubio, co-founder of Rubio's.
As a college student, Ralph made regular pilgrimages to Mexico's best beaches to surf, sun and socialize. It was on one of these trips that Ralph sat down at a seaside taqueria and met his true love. He was hooked on the fish taco.
Several years later, with the help of his entire family, Ralph opened his first Rubio's. A walk-up stand in Mission Bay, San Diego. It was at that walk-up stand that America had its first taste of the fish taco. Soon, they too were hooked. As word of Ralph's fish tacos spread, so did his business. One restaurant quickly expanded to three, and before long, San Diego's best-kept secret was out. Rubio's started a fish taco phenomenon that spread from coast to coast. Each new restaurant brought not just The Original Fish Taco® recipe, but also Ralph's commitment to fresh and high quality ingredients. A commitment that has become as synonymous with Rubio’s as the taco that made us a coastal favorite.

11. Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant (Lafayette, Louisiana)
The Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant in the downtown district of Lafayette, Louisiana immediately catches the eye of anyone who passes by. It is indeed located in a building that was once a gas station and the owners made the wise decision to keep the outside esthetics as vintage as possible. True, the gas pumps are gone - replaced by outdoor dining, but it doesn't take much imagination to envision a classic Thunderbird pulling up for a tank full of ethyl.
My wife and I knew nothing about the Spoonbill, but we just had to eat there because it just looked so cool.
Honestly we were quite delighted with the whole dining experience. The ambiance inside is just as retro and cool as the outside. The serving staff was cheerful, polite and helpful. The food came quickly and was absolutely wonderful. The prices were very reasonable for a trendy place like this.

+1 415 421 01858. Blake's Lotaburger (Chain, New Mexico)
It was 1952. World War II was seven years in the rearview mirror. And Blake Chanslor, a veteran, moved to Albuquerque from Borger, Texas, to open the first Lotaburger on the corner of Southern Avenue and San Mateo Boulevard. The spare menu included a Lotaburger, only 35 cents, the more petite Itsaburger, and a bag of chips. A vending machine around the corner sold soda, if you wanted to wash it all down. An astute observer of his customers, Chanslor realized that many brought their own green chile to smother accordingly. Inspired by those classic New Mexicans and chile connoisseurs, Chanslor added the green stuff to his fare. According to restaurant legend, he was the first establishment to market a green chile cheeseburger, now a staple of the state. Blake’s Lotaburger has since expanded to 74 locations in New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. Their burgers and bags appeared regularly on the television series Breaking Bad. And their chile? You bet, it comes straight from Hatch.

(505) 821-19587. King's Fish House (Rancho Cucamonga, California)
A long time ago, we embarked on a road trip in search of the ultimate seafood experience. We traveled down the highways and byways, pulled up a seat, put on bibs, and soaked up the seafood experience: The no-name dishes with unforgettable flavor, the fresh-caught oysters and clams piled high, the hand-lettered specials on ancient chalkboards, and the savory simmer of every combination of spices imaginable....
The pleasure of preparing and sharing seafood was simple and genuine, and it brought out the best in everyone. Often we felt as if we’d been welcomed into somebody’s home. That’s what King’s Fish House is all about- and we’ve tried to bring all of these ideas together into one single, spectacular place, filled with camaraderie and celebration, and the things we love best!

(909) 803-12806. Steer 'N Stein (Victorville, California)
Steer ‘n Stein was founded out of necessity on October 27, 1967 in Huntington Beach, California. I was unemployable, needed a job and place to eat, so I created all these for myself. It continues to exist today because the necessity still exists. Steer ’n Stein in Huntington Beach is no longer, but has branched out into locations throughout Southern California.
Steer ‘n Stein was created without direction… some kind of dream… no recipes… and no money. Many, many years later we still have some kind of menu… no recipes… and lots of credit.
Steer ’n Stein’s success stems from loyal customers and employees who have been with us throughout the years, as well as the Steer ‘n Stein families and associates who operate our restaurants.

One of the restaurants that I really miss since my family moved away from California is Clearman's North Woods Inn. To this day I still crave their Cheesy Bread and Red Cabbage Salad that are both epic and legendary. Clearman's combines both excellent food with amazing ambiance. It's the kind of place that you would go on a first date as well as place you would take you wife to celebrate a special occasion. It's the kind of place that serves a bucket of peanuts in their shells as an appetizer and encourage you to throw those empty shells on the floor and walk all over them. It's the kind of place that serves a gourmet quality meal with a glass of your favorite beer.

The original Old Spaghetti Factory trolley car was found in a field near Reed College in Portland, OR. We refurbished the car and began using it as a unique dining area for guests at our first location. The trolley car has since become a fixture in our locations across the U.S. When our flagship restaurant relocated to its current Portland location, the original car moved with us, of course.
