I wanted to give a quick shout out to the folks over at Casa Ole' in Sulphur, Louisiana. I had a really good lunch over there yesterday so I thought that I should give them a little positive publicity.
Being from the Southwest I tend to be somewhat of a Mexican Food snob and I generally have high expectations that normally don't get met.
Well here in Louisiana anyway. I have had one heck of a time finding anything that resembles decent Mexican Food since I moved here four years ago. I should mention that I did have a good meal at Los Portales in Alexandria. Honestly though the food was just okay. Had the place been in California or New Mexico it would have rated lower, but for Louisiana it was good.
Can you believe that I actually went to a place when I fist moved here that seasoned the food with Cajun spices? You don't put Tony's on tacos folks!
I've gotten a bit off track. I knew going in that Casa Ole' was a place that served Tex-Mex so I knew that I wasn't going to get something like I had out west. That being said I was really pleased with the meal I had. I actually ate everything. They chips were nice and crisp cantina style and the salsa was flavorful yet mild (it could have been kicked up a bit for my taste). The main course came out super fast and I actually liked that my burrito was covered in Chili Con Carne as opposed to the spicy red chile I've been craving.
Note: Chili is normally meat, beans and spices while Chile is a sauce made from roasted and ground chile pods.
The service was great, my waitress was very sweet and polite. As I said the food came out super fast and the price was really reasonable. Actually just a little more than I would have paid if I had decided just to swing through a burger joint. I did, of course, have one of their lunch specials. Had I opted for a full meal I would have paid a little more, but still very reasonable.
If your traveling through the Lake Charles area I recommend detouring off the I-10 in Sulphur and giving Casa Ole' a try.
