The small town of Fouke, located in the southwest corner of Arkansas near Texarkana, is renowned for the Fouke Monster, the subject of the 1972 documentary-style film The Legend of Boggy Creek. Reports of sightings of a Bigfoot-like creature in Fouke inspired filmmaker Charles Pierce to create the original movie, which then spawned two sequels featuring the 7-foot-tall, ape-like creature.
Upon arriving in Fouke, the first stop for any monster hunter or movie enthusiast is the Monster Mart - a combination convenience store, gift shop, and Bigfoot museum. While it's undoubtedly a tourist trap, capitalizing on the local legend, there is more to experience here than meets the eye. The museum portion of the Monster Mart features a delightfully campy, sideshow-like atmosphere, with giant statues of the legendary Fouke Monster, amusing Bigfoot illustrations adorning the walls, and an impressively large werewolf head on display - all the kitschy trappings one would expect from such an eccentric roadside attraction.
