This past weekend the wife and I took a little excursion into the eastern Texas city of Lufkin to do a little site seeing. We hit the area just around noon so food was our first priority. We spotted a lot of the same old same old fast food joints and we were about to settle for the local Whataburger when I spotted what looked like a retro drive-in across the street.
Why settle for some place that we can eat at anytime when we had a chance to experience some of the local cuisine?
Ray's Drive has been a Lufkin hang out since 1959 and the place sure had that cool retro vibe to it. The wife and I are real burger fanatics so I ordered the cheeseburger with fries and she got the patty melt with onion rings. Being in Texas I felt it would be sacrilege not to wash the whole thing down with a Dr Pepper.
I have to tell you that the food was absolutely delicious. Everything on my burger was hot, fresh and the cheese was delightfully melted. The fries likewise were fried to a perfect golden-brown crispness. I could tell that my wife was in heaven from the first bite of her patty melt. She commented that 'finally some one made her sandwich the way she liked it." For some reason no one here in Louisiana can make one to her satisfaction but Ray's nailed it. Likewise the onion rings were made the way my wife loves. The breading was light and flaky. She ate every bit of it.
Truth be told, the little lady and I have a rocky track record when it comes to choosing local eateries. I picked a place in Williams, Arizona that was so bad our dog turned his nose up at the leftovers. Ray's however was on the opposite end of the spectrum and my wife actually gave me kudos for choosing it over one of the better (and safe) burger chains.
Points for Ken!
If you are ever in east Texas you have to stop by Ray's Drive In for some great food and a slice of good old American nostalgia!
