My wife just loves to mention the restaurants we used to eat at when we lived in California all the time. So tonight she said the words In-N-Out and right on que my mind thought of a Double Double and Animal Style Fries. As you can imagine the second I started thinking about the food my taste buds started craving it. That's a real culinary conundrum because we aren't in Anaheim we are in Alexandria, Louisiana and the nearest In-N-Out is a four hour drive away in Dallas.
Wait - only a four hour drive away? Hmm - lets gas up the Kia, I feel a road trip a brewing!
As many of you know my favorite hamburger chain is Blake's Lottaburger in New Mexico, but firmly in second place is In-N-Out and I haven't had one since 2020 when I traveled back to California for our sons wedding.
Nobody should have to go without a Double Double and Animal Style Fries for three years - it's against the Geneva Convention or the Magna Carta - maybe something even more spiritual? Anyway, it's just not right.
Okay, maybe I'm having way too much fun here.
The truth of matter is the food at In-N-Out is amazing! If you have one of their burgers you will understand my willingness to drive four hours just to have one.
One of the charms of eating at In-N-Out is the simplicity of the menu. While the competition is always adding and subtracting different types of menu items, In-N-Out keeps it simple. Three types of burgers (a regular Hamburger, Cheeseburger and the Double Double), Fries and a fountain drink.
That's it.
Okay - maybe that isn't exactly it, because there is a secret menu that is not on the menu. It's true that if you're in the know there are things that you can order that aren't on the regular menu. You may have noted that I was craving Animal Style Fries. Well, that's nowhere on the menu. Animal Style Fries are fries covered in Thousand Island Dressing and cheese. It may sound weird, but it's so good trust me.
In-N-Out may be a burger chain that is known around the world today but it started off as a humble little burger stand in Baldwin Park, California in 1948. Harry Snyder and his wife Esther opened the first ever drive-thru in California right next door to their home. Today, there are over 300 In-N-Out restaurants from California, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada to Texas. There are even plans today for new franchises in Tennessee.
Anybody up for a road trip to Texas?
