What could be a hipper place to eat lunch than a restaurant that inhabits a vintage Conoco gas station right?
The Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant in the downtown district of Lafayette, Louisiana immediately catches the eye of anyone who passes by. It is indeed located in a building that was once a gas station and the owners made the wise decision to keep the outside esthetics as vintage as possible. True, the gas pumps are gone - replaced by outdoor dining, but it doesn't take much imagination to envision a classic Thunderbird pulling up for a tank full of ethyl.
My wife and I knew nothing about the Spoonbill, but we just had to eat there because it just looked so cool.
Honestly we were quite delighted with the whole dining experience. The ambiance inside is just as retro and cool as the outside. The serving staff was cheerful, polite and helpful. The food came quickly and was absolutely wonderful. The prices were very reasonable for a trendy place like this.
My wife had a hamburger and fries that she couldn't stop raving about. I had the fish tacos and they were absolutely delicious.
Overall we hadn't had a dining experience like this since we both left California. In fact we couldn't help but notice that the whole look of the Spoonbill had a very distinct California feel from the décor to the really cool t-shirts the staff wore. I did a little research and discovered that one of the owners spent several years in Los Angeles learning the restaurant business and it is obvious that he took everything he absorbed in SoCal and poured it into the Spoonbill.
My wife and I felt like we were back in California, if only for lunch and it left both of us with a warm happy feeling.
I can't recommend the Spoonbill enough. If you ever travel to Lafayette a meal at the Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant is an absolute must.
