The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1966) - Iconic Halloween Special | Retro TV Memories

The story opens with Linus and Lucy venturing into a nearby pumpkin patch in search of the perfect pumpkin. After Linus rejects a few smaller options, Lucy spots the largest pumpkin in the patch. Linus then clumsily rolls the massive pumpkin back home. Once there, Lucy grabs a large knife and starts slicing into the pumpkin, gutting it. At this point, a horrified Linus cries out, "Ohhhh, you didn't tell me you were going to kill it!" and begins wailing.

As autumn arrived, Charlie Brown busied himself raking leaves with Snoopy's help. Linus then spotted the leaf pile and impulsively jumped into it, unaware he still had a wet sucker in hand. Soon after, Lucy approached with a football, tempting Charlie Brown to kick it. Though initially hesitant, Charlie Brown agreed when Lucy produced a letter. However, in a familiar twist, she pulled the football away at the last moment, sending him tumbling to the ground once again.

Linus writes a letter to The Great Pumpkin, much to the disbelief of Charlie Brown, the laughter of Snoopy, the assurance from Patty that the Great Pumpkin is fake, and even a violent threat from Lucy to make Linus stop. In the letter, Linus laments that "more people believe in Santa Claus than in [The Great Pumpkin], but let's face it; Santa Claus has had more publicity. But being number two, perhaps you try harder" - a tongue-in-cheek jab at Avis Rent-A-Car's popular slogan of the day.

Rewritten Sentence: Linus mails his letter to the Great Pumpkin, using his blanket to open the mailbox after Lucy refuses to help. When Charlie Brown receives an invitation to Violet's Halloween party, he dances excitedly. But his joy is short-lived, as Lucy informs him there were two lists - one for invited guests and one for those not invited. To Charlie Brown's dismay, Lucy is certain his name was on the wrong list.

On Halloween night, the group excitedly prepares their costumes. Lucy dons a witch's ensemble, while the other children dress as ghosts. Pig-Pen's signature cloud of dust makes him easily identifiable, and Charlie Brown's sheet has eyeholes haphazardly cut throughout, as he sheepishly admits to struggling with the scissors.

On their way to go trick-or-treating, the gang stops at the pumpkin patch, where they mock Linus for missing out on the fun the previous year, particularly when he asks if they've come to sing "pumpkin carols." However, Linus remains convinced that the Great Pumpkin will appear, believing the patch is sincere enough. He even persuades Sally to stay and wait with him, while the rest of the gang departs, leaving the two behind.

During trick-or-treating, the other kids collect an assortment of candy, gum, apples, cookies, popcorn balls, and even money. But at every house, poor Charlie Brown receives the same disappointing treat - a rock. After the tricks and treats, the gang makes a quick stop at the pumpkin patch to tease Linus and Sally once more, before heading off to Violet's Halloween party.

Charlie Brown's dog Snoopy, dressed in his World War I flying ace gear, climbs aboard his Sopwith Camel (which is really just his doghouse) to do battle with the Red Baron. After being shot down, Snoopy makes his way across the countryside and briefly crashes a Halloween party. He then heads to the pumpkin patch where Linus and Sally are still waiting for the Great Pumpkin. Hearing Snoopy's rustling, Linus believes it's the Great Pumpkin. When Snoopy rises above the pumpkins (still hidden in the shadows), Linus promptly faints. Sally is outraged, having missed both trick-or-treating and the Halloween party, and threatens to "sue" Linus. She storms out with the other kids, leaving Linus alone in the pumpkin patch, still convinced the Great Pumpkin will come.

On the morning of November 1st, Lucy rises at 4 a.m. to check on Linus. Finding his bed vacant, she ventures to the pumpkin patch, where she discovers him shivering on the ground, wrapped in his security blanket. Begrudgingly, Lucy escorts Linus home and to his room. There, she removes his shoes as he collapses onto his bed, and she covers him before storming out in frustration.

As the day wears on, Linus and Charlie Brown discuss the previous night's events while sitting at the rock wall. When Charlie Brown attempts to console Linus by admitting to his own past follies, Linus flies into a rage, defiantly vowing to Charlie that the Great Pumpkin will appear the following year. Linus's angry outburst continues even as the end credits begin to roll.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
