Story and Photos by Ken Hulsey
In 2023, I captured a delightful image of the Kansas City Southern Executive Train powered by vintage FP9 and F9B locomotives as it passed through Pineville, Louisiana at night. This photo has always been a favorite of mine, as it was one of my first successful attempts at photographing a train in action after dark.
To add a touch of vintage flair, I experimented with the image, first rendering it in black and white to evoke the look of a 1950s or 60s photograph. I then adjusted the tones to create a retro 1960s or 70s aesthetic. I was thrilled with the results of both edits, as they lent an authentic, nostalgic feel to the dynamic train shot.
For fans of the Kansas City Southern Railroad in Central Louisiana, these images are sure to stir up fond memories. I've read accounts of locals flocking to the old KCS depot in Alexandria to greet the arrival of the railroad's renowned "Southern Belle" passenger train on summer evenings, only to race to Pineville to catch a glimpse as it continued onward to Shreveport. In a sense, my photographs allow viewers to step back in time and experience that classic railroading atmosphere. The question remains - are these images truly from 2023, or have they been plucked straight from the past? The choice is yours to make.
