The Los Angeles Rams had a busy day, with the news breaking early that they had reached a new contract agreement with their Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Matthew Stafford. This put an end to swirling rumors that the team had given up on Stafford and were prepared to trade him, as both the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders had expressed strong interest in acquiring the veteran signal-caller. The Raiders had reportedly already worked out a contract offer and were trying to finalize trade compensation, while the Giants were also ready to enter the bidding. Additionally, Super Bowl-winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers had indicated he was prepared to sign with the Rams if Stafford was traded. However, on Friday, Stafford agreed to a new deal to remain with the team he led to victory in Super Bowl LVI in 2022. Despite the Giants and Raiders being willing to offer Stafford more money, he ultimately opted to stay with the Rams, where he has the best chance of returning to the Super Bowl.
The team announced a new 3-year, $57 million contract for their top free agent, left tackle Alaric Jackson. This was welcome news, as Jackson had quietly emerged as one of the league's premier left tackles over the past couple of seasons. Retaining Jackson was a priority for the team, and securing the deal before free agency began served the best interests of both parties. With Jackson now under contract to protect his blind side, quarterback Matthew Stafford can feel more confident about the offensive line during the remainder of his time in Los Angeles.
The Rams have made some key offseason moves that should bolster their team for the upcoming season and beyond. Signing both Matthew Stafford and Alaric Jackson aids their strategy for free agency and the draft. Finding a new receiver to pair with Puka Nacua is a top priority, and they also need to upgrade at cornerback and middle linebacker.
Over the past two seasons, the Rams have rebuilt their defense through the draft, adding a significant number of new players. Coach Sean McVay wants his offense to be more versatile, so the team is likely to pursue players with speed and skill sets to complement Nacua and running back Kyren Williams.
The Rams have also been searching for a playmaking tight end for the past couple of years. With Stafford entrenched as the starting quarterback, the team may look to draft another QB who can learn behind the veteran for a few seasons before potentially taking over when Stafford retires. This gives them some flexibility - if they don't find the right QB prospect in this year's draft, they can wait until 2026 to address the position.
