The devastating Palisades and Eaton fires have forced many Angelenos to evacuate their homes, leaving them wondering when they will be able to return and begin rebuilding their lives. However, fire officials state it will be at least a week before repatriation can commence, and even then, only for a select few homes. Though the active fires have been extinguished, officials caution the area remains unsafe due to air quality concerns. This has led to growing frustration among evacuated residents in Encino, who have been displaced to local hotels or staying with family and friends since the evacuations.
Ronnen Miz, an evacuated resident, explained that the fire was concerning at first. "In the beginning, it was a good idea [to evacuate] because from my house, you could see the smoke and the orange glow. It was very concerning for a lot of us and the neighbors too," he said. However, Miz noted that the situation became "a little too much" in the following days. "During Monday, Tuesday, the past couple of days, you couldn't smell the smoke or see it. So we're all kind of confused. All the neighbors are like, 'Why can't we get in?'"
Similarly, Michael Ruby, an evacuated Brentwood resident just outside the mandatory evacuation zone, is wondering when he will be allowed to return home. "We're thankful that we have a house to go back to, and we feel for all the people that have lost so much. But it's just frustrating," he told KTLA's Kareen Wynter. "There's no answers. The Department of Water and Power just says the Fire Department will tell them when it's safe to turn the power back on, and they're not really giving much answers."
The officials acknowledge this is a challenge for residents, who are hopeful they will receive an update on when they can return home soon. However, Marrone stressed that any decisions will depend entirely on whether it is safe for people to do so. - Source KTLA News
