Cookie Monster Strikes! As an expert in monster films, I'm excited to feature some of the best, like "Creature From The Black Lagoon" and "Them!," as well as some of the worst, such as "Green Slime" and our present topic, "Creature From The Haunted Sea." Both types of films can be enjoyed for various reasons.
"Creature From The Haunted Sea" is no exception to the rule that bad movies have their own charm. The sheer weirdness of this film is simply too much to overlook. Only the legendary low-budget filmmaker Roger Corman could have concocted such a strange mix of camp, cheesy rip-offs, cliche characters, and the most poorly designed movie monster ever. At least the Ro-Man from "Robot Monster" had some charisma!
While the plot sounds promising - an American agent investigating mobsters who plan to steal treasure from Cuban officers during Castro's revolution, only to encounter a real sea monster - Corman deliberately turned it into a comedy. This results in a truly bizarre film, with a Humphrey Bogart-esque mob boss, a henchman who only communicates in animal sounds, and a tangled web of love triangles.
The real star, however, is the utterly ridiculous monster itself, which looks like a horrifying blend of "Cookie Monster" and "Sigmund the Sea Monster." One can only imagine the $10 budget that went into creating this cinematic abomination.
Ultimately, "Creature From The Haunted Sea" doesn't quite work as either a monster film or a comedy. But that's precisely why it's so darn entertaining - it's a true testament to what can be achieved with a shoestring budget and three days of filming. While the laughs may be few and far between, this is a movie that has to be seen to be believed.
