I normally don't write reviews of stores but our family had a great time looking through the Bricks & Minifigs store in Pearland, Texas. As a child that loved to play with Legos way back in the 70s I can't help but marvel at how the toys have evolved from just simple colored bricks to complex shaped pieces where just about anything can be built in detail. I used to try and build Star Wars stuff back in the day and with what I had on hand and my creations never looked anything like the real deal. With the kits available today I could have built a nearly spot on replica.
You really had to use your imagination back then.
The Lego company has a rather fascinating history:
The name ‘LEGO’ is an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well”. It’s our name and it’s our ideal. The global economic crisis forces carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen to produce new easy saleable products. The beginning of the LEGO Group starts with wooden toys, such as cars, airplanes and yoyo’s. Ole Kirk Kristiansen also produces ladders, ironing boards, Christmas tree stands and other articles for everyday use. It is a tough beginning for the company and Ole reaches out to his family for help. The family does not always agree with Ole Kirk Kristiansen. When he asks his brothers and sisters to act as guarantors for a loan of DKK 3,000 to secure the company’s future, one of them asks: “Can’t you find something more useful to do?” Ole Kirk Kristiansen repays the loan at compound interest in 1939. It is a big day in his life, his son Godtfred Kirk Christiansen later recalls.
Employees begin experimenting with plastics immediately after the arrival of the company´s first plastic injection-molding machine in late 1947. The machine is installed in a building next to the woodworking factory, after it has been tested in the basement of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen´s home. While still getting acquainted with plastic molding, the company introduces its first plastic products in 1948 - However, it is not until 1949 the plastic production really starts heating up.
The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. The company has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder.
In 1949 the LEGO Group’s plastics department manufactures various kinds of toys. Among these the company’s first plastic bricks, which are marketed under the name Automatic Binding Bricks. Giving the toy an English name is a tribute to the Allied forces who liberate Europe and end World War II in 1945. At this point the bricks, as all of the company’s other toys, are sold exclusively in Denmark. - READ MORE
