New Mexico True | Epic Escapades in the Enchanting Outdoors | Experience New Mexico's Outdoor Delights

Exploring New Mexico’s expansive outdoors may seem like a daunting task. Let us guide you to some great places where you can find your own adventure!

Taos Up and Over Trail Run

Challenge the steep and cragged landscape at Taos Ski Valley in this two-race series. Grab yourself a finishers medal crafted from fallen timber, or a double-trouble medal if you’re up for both races! A reusable HydraPak SpeedCup is provided to all runners as well!

Hosted on Saturday, the Up & Over 10K is notoriously challenging with many runners returning year-after-year to beat their PBs. There are many groups that run together; friends, co-workers, and whole families who want to take on the mountain. The course is a formidable and scenic 2,612’ climb from 9,321′ at the base, topping out at 11,819′. Expect amazing views of Kachina and Wheeler Peaks, followed by a technical descent through high alpine terrain.

On Sunday take on the 2nd Annual VerticAL's VertK, a daunting vertical 1K up TAOS’s famed Al’s Run. In winter, Al’s is an intimidating long, steep black diamond ski run directly under Lift 1, carved with seemingly infinite measure of moguls. VerticAL's participants will scramble up from the base to the finish at the top of Al’s – a grueling gain of 1,497’. Due to the demanding terrain, this event will be open to participants 16+ years old.

Take a Hike to the Headwaters

MAP A RIVER AND ALL its tributaries, and the web will swallow entire Western states. There’s not a single source, but a network of them. “All the major rivers of the country start as these little, tiny trickles that you could step across, and when you gather up all those little, tiny trickles, they become something more,” says Maribeth Pecotte, public affairs officer for the Gila National Forest. “They add together and they become grand.”

Visit a single contributor by camping at the Dipping Vat Campground near Snow Lake, a small reservoir regularly stocked for fishing. Then head into pine forest on the Middle Fork Trail, near where the Middle Fork of the Gila River gets its start. Several loops or out-and-back hikes are possible. You can also thru-hike the more than 20 miles into iconic river canyons and to where the east, middle, and west forks of the Gila River braid together near the Gila Visitor Center.

Quarai Under the Stars

Join park rangers at Quarai for a spectacular dark sky program! To kick off the evening from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm, enjoy a guided pueblo and mission program. You'll learn about the blending of cultures and the way they shaped central New Mexico for generations. Then, enjoy pristine dark sky viewing through telescopes, check out the dark sky photography station, and experience the awe and wonder of a pristine night sky. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and your spirit of discovery!

Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial

Every August Gallup plays host to Native Americans from across the United States in a massive Inter-tribal ceremonial. The Indoor and Outdoor Marketplace and the Ceremonial Showroom present the country's most complete and varied displays of genuine Indian fine arts, including Navajo rugs, katsinas, jewelry, pottery and basketry. There are socials, rodeos and parades. Most events take place at Red Rock Park, just east of Gallup, and some events are located in downtown Gallup.

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
