From the New Mexico Tourism Department
Exploring the Past in the OutdoorsMany of New Mexico’s parks, monuments, and historic sites are off of the beaten path. In the warmer months, access to these sites is relatively unhindered and provides a great opportunity to explore.
Birding in the Gila and BeyondNew Mexico features more than 500 different birds across its varied and beautiful terrain. This allows for plentiful opportunities to experience the majestic nature of these winged animals.
Of course, this list isn’t exhaustive and every part of New Mexico has incredible birding hot spots. There are four Audubon chapters and many bird clubs around the state that offer field trips throughout the year. The website at nm.audubon.org, linked to the right, has resources and links to birding groups in Farmington, Ruidoso, Roswell, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Silver City, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and El Paso, Texas.
Fall migration is an incredible time of year to get your family connected to birds, nature and to conservation. Get out and start watching. Let yourself be inspired by the magic of birds. You’ll have a great time and maybe discover a special birding spot of your own.
Parks and monuments in the Land of Enchantment don’t have to explored blindly either! Check out one of these enlightening events below for an insider look into some of these places that are so special to New Mexico.

Amazing Adventures in Farmington
Find some of the most unique and entertaining adventures in the picturesque northwestern town of Farmington. Explore mesmerizing rock formations, sample amazing cuisine or simply take in the views!
AS THE MAYOR OF
FARMINGTON, Nate Duckett appreciates the northwestern New Mexico town’s outdoor adventures, contemporary art and culture, and unique dining and shopping. But Duckett believes it’s Farmington’s people that make it special. “The diversity of place and of people are unique,” he says.
Once home to Ancestral Puebloan people and later the Navajo, Ute, and Jicarilla Apache, Farmington lies tucked among mesas at the lush confluence of the La Plata, Animas, and San Juan rivers. Yet this region’s distinctive history dates back some 74 million years to when dinosaurs roamed what is now the
Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness. This surreal 45,000-acre landscape, about an hour south of Farmington, is filled with fantastical rock formations shaped by time and weather, along with petrified logs and fossils. Guided experiences can be had through
Navajo Tours USA or
Journey Into the Past Tours. “The Bisti is part of the magic of this place,” says Duckett.
