Today the Los Angeles Rams made their final round of cuts to reduce their 80-man training camp roster down to 53 players. As is the case every year there were quite a few surprises. It appears that this year the Rams really paid attention to the play of individuals during camp and preseason games. Some individuals played their way onto the roster and likewise several others played themselves off.
Lets take a look at who made the team:
Quarterback (3)Matthew Stafford, John Wolford, Bryce Perkins
Everyone knew going in that Stafford and Wolford were locks. Perkins played well enough during the preseason to sorta force the Rams to add him to the final roster. Because of his level of play this summer it is doubtful that Perkins would not be snatched up via waivers.
Darrell Henderson, Sony Michel, Jake Funk
The injury to Xavier Jones was much more serious than was previously known and the player wouldn't be able to play this season so he was waived as an injured player.
There is no way the Rams go through the season with only three backs. Look for a waiver addition or another trade to bring in another player for this group.
Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, DeSean Jackson, Tutu Atwell, Ben Skowronek*
No real surprise here,
Tyler Higbee, Johnny Mundt, Jacob Harris, Brycen Hopkins
Hopkins was virtually invisible during camp and didn't show much in preseason games yet he still made it onto the roster. It looks like the coaching staff is still clinging to the hope that he develops into an NFL caliber player.
Andrew Whitworth, David Edwards, Brian Allen, Austin Corbett, Rob Havenstein, Joseph Noteboom, Coleman Shelton^, Bobby Evans, Alaric Jackson, Tremayne Anchrum
When you have a franchise quarterback like Stafford you want the best guys you can assemble to protect him. The Rams kept as much beef as they could to make sure they have enough depth to get the job done.
Aaron Donald, Sebastian Joseph-Day, A’Shawn Robinson*, Greg Gaines, Bobby Brown III, Michael Hoecht, Jonah Williams
The injury to Robinson had a lot to do with who made the roster here. The play of Hoecht and Williams in the preseason was outstanding.
Leonard Floyd, Kenny Young, Troy Reeder, Justin Hollins, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo*, Ernest Jones, Travin Howard, Terrell Lewis, Chris Garrett
The big surprise here is the addition of small school standout and 7th round pick Chris Garrett. Well, it is a surprise to anyone who didn't see him play against the Raiders. In the short time he was on the field he all but took over the game stopping runners for a loss and relentlessly harassing the passer, sacking him twice.
Oh, and he was credited with three passes defensed so he can drop into coverage as well.
There was no way Garrett was going to make it through waivers.
Jalen Ramsey, Darious Williams, David Long, Robert Rochell
This group seems a bit thin, but the several players in the next group can play both safety as well as corner.
Jordan Fuller, Taylor Rapp, Terrell Burgess, Nick Scott, J.R. Reed, JuJu Hughes
Both Reed and Hughes are two players who jumped over veterans by putting together great camps and strong preseason performances.
Matt Gay, Johnny Hekker^, Matt Orzech
Fan favorite Johnny Hekker looked like he was on the way out because Corey Bojorquez was playing at an ultra high level. Hekker restructures his contract and Bojorquez was traded to Green Bay.
I don't know if that was the right move? Hekker's play really fell off last year and Bojorquez looked like one of the better punters in the league. I hope Hekker bounces back.
