I was thrilled this morning when I learned that the Rams had signed their first outside free agent. The player that has me all geeked out is former Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson who possess elite speed and big play ability. Though the Rams already have one of the most talented receiver corps in the NFL, they lacked a player that could stretch the field and take advantage of new quarterback Matthew Stafford's ability to throw deep.
They don't have that problem anymore.
Jackson is thirty-four years old, has a history of injuries, and nearing the end of his career but those factors really shouldn't be seen as a negative in this case. For starters Jackson will not be considered one of the Rams starters since the team already has both Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. This will allow Jackson to be more of a rotational player along with second year wideout Shawn Jefferson. Though the Rams do deploy a lot of three receiver sets, the fact that Jackson will be not an every down receiver will help Jackson be more durable and catch breathers during the game.
The dimension that Jackson brings to the Rams offense should give opposing teams multiple headaches. With an offensive minded head coach like Sean McVay at the controls and a big play quarterback like Matthew Stafford the addition of a receiver like Jackson makes the Rams even more deadly. His ability to take the top off a defense will open up things for Kupp, Woods, and tight end Tyler Higbee while opening things up for tailback Cam Akers.
Jackson's best game in a couple of years came in the 2019 opener while with the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game he gave Washington's defense absolute fits.
