Agave Mexican Grill & Cantina in Lafayette Louisiana

Here is the low-down. Agave is by far the best Mexican food that I have had in the five years that I have lived here in Louisiana. I strongly recommend searching this place out if you are in Lafayette and are craving something tasty and different. I will be coming back again guaranteed.

Burger Barn in Olla Louisiana

If you every travel through Olla a stop at the Burger Barn is a must. You will always find the place filled with locals chatting about the high school football game or some other area gossip. I often like to just sit quietly and listen to all the conversations going on around me. Not that I want to eavesdrop on something personal internationally mind you, instead I just like to be reminded of the quaintness of small town life here in America.

Casa Ole' in Sulphur Louisiana

The service was great, my waitress was very sweet and polite. As I said the food came out super fast and the price was really reasonable. Actually just a little more than I would have paid if I had decided just to swing through a burger joint. I did, of course, have one of their lunch specials. Had I opted for a full meal I would have paid a little more, but still very reasonable.

If your traveling through the Lake Charles area I recommend detouring off the I-10 in Sulphur and giving Casa Ole' a try.

Fatboy & Skinny's in Leesville Louisiana

The staff at Fatboy & Skinny's were fun, cheerful and great to talk to. That is one of the real charms of interacting with people from this region of the country. They are almost always open, honest and refreshingly down to earth. You could really sense that this restaurant was something that they really loved. The smiles on their faces told a story that didn't need words to tell it.

If you are passing through Leesville you absolutely have to eat at Fatboy & Skinny's!

Flying Heart Brewing in Natchitoches Louisiana

Our experience at Flying Heart was something wonderful indeed. We started with the Pretzel Bites that were served with delicious Black Heart Infused Cheddar Sauce and HWY 80 Infused Ale Mustard. For the main course I chose the Carnitas Pizza by Jared which was topped with Salsa Verde, Ranch, Mozzarella, Pork Carnitas, White Onions, Cilantro and Chipotle Cheddar. I have to tell you that it was an amazing fusion that satisfied both my love of Mexican Food and my love of Pizza. I honestly can't recommend this one enough, it was absolutely delicious.

Jersey Mike's in Baton Rouge

I ordered the #13 The Original Italian with provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, and pepperoni on white bread and my wife got the #5 Super Sub with provolone, ham, prosciuttini and cappacuolo also on white bread. We ordered both Mike's Way with Onions, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Vinegar, Oil and Spices. We also both got Miss Vickie's kettle style BBQ chips which are also a must when eating at Jersey Mike's. We each got the 6 inch sub so we both split the sandwiches and shared both sandwiches.

Of the two I enjoyed my Original Italian a little more. That's not a knock on the Super Sub which was also very tasty.

There is just something magical about a fresh doughnut that melts in your mouth and Krispy Kreme has built a food empire on providing their customers just that. Each location has an in-house doughnut factory where the food comes straight out of the oven and right into the box. You just have to make sure that the signature 'Hot Light' is lit and you can be assured that the food you are about to eat is as hot and fresh as it can be.

There are few times in ones life that you get a chance to eat like a Roman Senator or King Henry the 8th and Friday night was my chance. Indeed to get the full experience of The Melting Pot you need to be in for the long haul because what you are about to partake in is a full four-course meal.

Pedro's Tacos & Tequila in Alexandria Lousiana

The first time I had the Puffed Tacos and today I went with a simple combination plate of an enchilada, tamale, taco and refried beans. Both meals were simply delicious and I highly recommend them. The one thing that both my wife and I really love is their salsa. Any Mexican Food lover will tell you that a good cup salsa with chips can make or break any dinning experience. You may think of it as a free appetizer, but it sets up the pallet for the main meal to come. A bland unflavorful salsa sets a bad tone for your eating experience. If the salsa is really blah, it's a good bet the rest of the food will be as well.

Ray's Drive In - Lufkin Texas

I have to tell you that the food was absolutely delicious. Everything on my burger was hot, fresh and the cheese was delightfully melted. The fries likewise were fried to a perfect golden-brown crispness. I could tell that my wife was in heaven from the first bite of her patty melt. She commented that 'finally some one made her sandwich the way she liked it." For some reason no one here in Louisiana can make one to her satisfaction but Ray's nailed it. Likewise the onion rings were made the way my wife loves. The breading was light and flaky. She ate every bit of it.

I had the Dynamite Shrimp Tacos and they were as advertised - simply dynamite. The shrimp was glazed with the restaurant's signature Dynamite Sauce which is flavorful with just enough pop yet not too spicy. The addition of cabbage om top reminded me of the famous Baja fish tacos I enjoyed on the West Coast.

Royal India Bistro in Alexandria Louisiana

Tonight I ordered The Chef's Special Chicken Curry and a side of the Pesto Naan and it was nothing short of delicious. I tore through that plate of chicken curry and rice like a man who had been eating nothing but coconuts on some deserted island for the last half decade. I only put my fork down long enough to stuff my face with the naan. My diet soda only served as a lubricant to get one bite down so I get another shoveled in.

I'm not normally prone to such an eating orgy, but the food was just that good.

Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant in Lafayette Louisiana

Honestly we were quite delighted with the whole dining experience. The ambiance inside is just as retro and cool as the outside. The serving staff was cheerful, polite and helpful. The food came quickly and was absolutely wonderful. The prices were very reasonable for a trendy place like this.

My wife had a hamburger and fries that she couldn't stop raving about. I had the fish tacos and they were absolutely delicious.

Now there are two types of these deep fried culinary delights. One is the bean and cheese and the other is the beef and cheese. Honestly you can't go wrong with either of them. Each one is a trip straight to Mexican Food Heaven. The joy doesn't end there however, there is a bonus in the form of cups of homemade hot sauce. Add a little bit of the stuff to each bite and the whole experience goes to another level. - READ MORE

The Greatest Hamburger In America Is: Blake's Lotaburger! (New Mexico)

Anyway, Blake’s great food just doesn’t end with the Green Chilie Cheeseburger adored by explorers and animal photographers around the world. Their fries are also amazing and I would put their Breakfast Burrito up against all comers. - READ MORE

Some West Coast Flavor: Ono Hawaiian BBQ

It was always the Chicken Katsu that was our favorite. It wasn't simply the fine pieces of breaded chicken that made the meal, it was the combination of the meat and the signature Katsu Sauce that made the experience something that you would find yourself craving. - READ MORE

Abandoned Louisiana - The Pirate's Cove Water Park / Resort in Iowa

About ten minutes east of the city of Lake Charles are the remains of an abandoned water park . The decaying structures are clearly visible from the busy I-10 freeway and for years drivers have wondered about it's history and why it was left for dead.   The Pirate's Cove Water Park actually has a rather interesting story behind it. A story that has been repeated over and over again, unfortunately, here in Louisiana. It's just another example of how government bureaucracy in this state killed an enterprise before it could ever get off the ground. Construction on the park began in 2008 and it was scheduled to open sometime in 2010. The sprawling complex was envisioned as an oasis from the hot summer heat that would feature luxurious amenities like a 900 foot long lazy river, a giant splash pad for the kids and eventually a five star hotel. The Pirate's Cove would have been an obvious tourist destination that could have brought much needed tax dollars and employment oppo...

Abandoned Louisiana - The Old Hightower Family Home in Dodson

I have to admit that I have been hanging on to these photos for a couple of months now just looking for the right minute to post them. Back in November I was traveling up to El Dorado, Arkansas and I passed through the small town of Dodson. While driving through town my eyes spotted a very attractive old house up on a hill and I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. I honestly don't know the history of this house, but I'm sure some local will send me message telling me all about it (and someone did see the UPDATE ), and it's not as cool as an abandoned railroad locomotive or old movie house but it really spoke to me. I have to wonder about the people who used to live in it and how it ended up in the state it is now. Anyone can see that it was a beautiful house long ago. What happened? How did such a grand residence end up like this? Those are questions that I can't answer unfortunately.  Unfortunately a site like this isn't all that uncommon here in Louisian...
