When I travel through the more rural parts of our country I always like to take in some of the local flavor by shunning the chain restaurants and dinning at small ma and pa eateries. This past weekend Terri were on the road from Alexandria to West Monroe so we decided to stop in one of our favorite roadside stops, the Burger Barn in Olla, Louisiana.Eating Across America: A Foodie's Guide to Food Trucks, Street Food and the Best Dish in Each State (Foodie gift) Hardcover - $14.99 @ Amazon.com - Order Here
We try to make this stop every time we head north because over the years we have never had a bad meal there and I think subconsciously we always seem to plan to travel through Olla just about lunch time.
This time through I decided to try something different and ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. I honestly have had a lot of burgers lately and wanted something a little lighter on the old waistline. Meanwhile Terri stuck with the old reliable cheeseburger and onion rings. We really enjoyed our meals, which of course was no surprise because like I said, we have never had a bad meal at the Burger Barn. What really stood out this time for me were the French Fries. I honestly can't remember when I had fries so good. They were batter fried and seasoned to perfection.
If you every travel through Olla a stop at the Burger Barn is a must. You will always find the place filled with locals chatting about the high school football game or some other area gossip. I often like to just sit quietly and listen to all the conversations going on around me. Not that I want to eavesdrop on something personal internationally mind you, instead I just like to be reminded of the quaintness of small town life here in America.
