Living in Louisiana has taught me a great deal about my faith and the importance of trusting in God, even during difficult times. Over the past few years, hurricanes, heavy rains and an ice storm have knocked out basic utilities like electricity, air conditioning, and running water for extended periods. While the poor infrastructure in the state is partly to blame, these hardships have reinforced how blessed I am by the everyday conveniences I once took for granted. Through these trying experiences, I've learned to be more appreciative of even the most mundane aspects of daily life.
On a scorching 90-degree day with 80% humidity, the importance of a functioning air conditioner becomes painfully clear. The sensation of being unable to cool down while drenched in sweat is utterly miserable. Likewise, having to huddle in a single room heated by electric floor heaters, while the rest of the house feels like an icebox, is an unpleasant experience. Being able to see your own breath while sitting on the toilet is a sign that the temperature has dropped to an uncomfortably low level inside your home.
Across the many places I've lived, reliable access to electricity and running water has been the norm. In Texas and New Mexico, I don't recall experiencing power outages. Even in California, where the power grid struggles to meet demand, disruptions were infrequent. Elsewhere, the utilities always functioned as expected - until I moved to Louisiana, where electricity and water service can be inconsistently available.
Growing up, I was unaware of how privileged and spoiled I had been. I thoughtlessly took everything for granted. It's only when you lose or lack certain things that you truly appreciate their value. Through this experience, God has instilled in me a profound sense of humility and gratitude for even the most basic blessings in life.
Now, I find myself offering daily prayers of thanksgiving, expressing gratitude to God for opening my eyes to the true worth of the things He has provided. It's my way of acknowledging His role in showing me the immense value of the important, yet often overlooked, aspects of my life.
I urge you to follow this example and remember to pray for and appreciate the "little" things - those blessings that are easy to miss but are no less significant. These overlooked gifts are still blessings from God, and He deserves our praise for them.
