Spirits Of Death In A Sea Of Trees - Japan's Suicide Forest

Written By: Terri Hulsey “I think the way we live in society these days has become more complicated. Face-to-face communication used to be vital, but now we can live our lives being online all day. However, the truth of the matter is, we still need to see each other’s faces, hear their voices, read their expressions, so we can fully understand their emotions. To coexist.” ~Azusa Hayano, Geologist, Park Ranger, and Suicide Patrolman Aokigahara (青木ヶ原), also known as the Sea of Trees (樹海) or Jukai, is a 14 square mile forest that lies at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan. Due to the wind-blocking density of the trees and an absence of wildlife, the forest is known for being exceptionally quiet and for the thickness of its trees. It is a twisting network of woody vines, and has a dangerous unevenness of the forest floor. It is rocky, cold, and littered with over 200 underground caves you could fall into accidentally. The forest is full of paradox and contrast. Its historic association...

We Could Walk On Water If We Only Had The Courage To Step Out Of The Boat

Written By Ken Hulsey Imagine that you are sailing on the ocean of a lake. When you look toward the shore a figure appears. After staring for a few moments you deduce that it's a man. As you continue to watch you realize, much to your surprise, that the man is actually walking toward you on the water. The man gets closer and closer. That's when you realize that the man is Jesus. As He gets to within fifty yards or so He stops. He motions for you to step out of the boat and come to Him on the water, That's when I would have a big problem. I have to confess that I have two fears, heights and water. When I was a toddler my brother and sister-in-law took me to the beach. I was so excited to see the ocean that I took off running into the water. Before my family could catch me the incoming tide knocked me down and I went under. I honestly don't know if I was ever in any danger of drowning or not, but the experience terrified me. Of course, as could imagine, my family scooped ...

Retro Saturday Morning: The Groovie Goolies (CBS)(1970-72)

Groovie Goolies is an American animated television show that had its original run on network television between 1970 and 1971. Set at a decrepit castle, the show focused on its monstrous inhabitants, who were primarily good-natured. Created by Filmation, Groovie Goolies was a set in the same universe as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and The Archie Show, with characters that frequently crossed over, but it was an original creation of the studio, not a spin-off from Archie Comics . Filmation had had enormous success the previous years with cartoons based on "The Archies" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" comics, which were shown in one hour blocks. In 1970, Sabrina was coupled with a new concept, The Groovie Goolies, featuring the classic Universal monsters Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Wolfman and the Mummy living together at 'Horrible Hall', a castle that also served as an Inn for monsters. Like the previous two shows, there were musical number...

Friday Night Videos: Depeche Mode - People Are People

My buddy, Steven Colby, has struck again. I had my mind set on a music video for tonight's installment of Friday Night Videos, that was until I happened to see Steven's post on Facebook about this being the fortieth anniversary of Depeche Modes first ever gig at the Bridge House in Canning Town (UK). Of course that got me thinking about Depeche Mode. I conceded to  feature the video for the song People Are People, which was the first exposure most Americans had with the band. I recall how the banging and clanging sound of the song grabbed my attention. There was nothing like it on American radio at the time and I immediately feel in love with this out of the norm sound. Check out more Depeche Mode on my Spotify playlist - HERE On a personal note, I got to meet Depeche Mode founding member Vince Clark after an Erasure (the group he has been part of since 1985 with vocalist Andy Bell.). I have to tell you that Vince was a great down to earth guy. We talked for about ten minutes w...

A UFO Shoots Down Air Force Fighter Over Kentucky?

Was Air Force pilot Thomas Mantell the first casualty of a US war against beings from another world? In the late 1940s reports of UFO sightings across the United States were at an all-time high after the reported sighting of nine flying saucers over the Cascade Mountains of Washington and the reported crash of a UFO in Roswell, New Mexico. Though UFO reports from that era were rather benign, simply sightings of strange objects in the sky, on the afternoon of January 7th, 1948, things would take a possibly sinister, and fatal turn. Shortly after noon on that fateful afternoon many witnesses in western Kentucky sighted a large unidentified craft, between 250 and 300 feet in diameter souring above them at a fantastic speed. Moments later the object's flight path took it into the view of the tower crew at Godman Air Force Base, near Fort Knox. As fate would have it, at precisely that moment a group of four Air National Guard P-51 Mustangs were circling the field preparing ...

The Simpsons: Dear Mom, I no longer fear Hell, because I've been to Kamp Krusty.

Today I wanted revisit the classic Simpsons episode "Kamp Krusty", which just happens to be my favorite episode. Kent Brockman: Ladies and gentlemen, I've been to Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and I can say without hyperbole that this is a million times worse than all of them put together. The Story: Bart and Lisa excitedly discuss their visit to Kamp Krusty, a summer camp run by Krusty the Clown. Homer has made Bart's visit conditional on him getting at least a C- average on his report card. Bart receives a D- in each subject from Ms. Krabappel, so he changes each grade into straight A+. Homer chides Bart for not faking plausible grades, but lets him go to camp anyway, because he does not want Bart hanging around throughout the summer. The camp's director, Mr. Black, has licensed Krusty's name from the comedian. The campers find out that the camp is a dystopia. Dolph, Jimbo and Kearney, the camp counselors, take the children on death marches, f...

She said her life was like a motorway

Sarah Cracknell (born 1967) is the vocalist of British pop group Saint Etienne. Cracknell's career started with the Windsor-based indie band The Worried Parachutes in 1982. Following the demise of the band she released a solo single Love Is All You need in 1987. She then formed a new band Prime Time with partner Mick Bund who released a handful of singles. She then appeared on the dance track Fingertips by Lovecut DB in 1990. Saint Etienne was originally to be an indie dance act featuring various vocalists. After Moira Lambert sang on their initial 1990 single "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and Donna Savage was heard on the follow-up single "Kiss and Make Up," Cracknell lent her vocals to "Nothing Can Stop Us" and ended up doing the rest of the singing on their debut album Foxbase Alpha. Cracknell has been Saint Etienne's permanent vocalist since then. Preceded by the single "Anymore" in 1996, Cracknell released a solo album, L...

Project U.F.O. (Project Blue Book) - From The Land of Forgotten Television

Project U.F.O. is a late 1970s NBC television series which lasted two seasons, from 1978 to 1979. Based loosely on the real-life Project Blue Book, the show was created by Dragnet veteran Jack Webb, who pored through Air Force files looking for episode ideas. The show was a production of Mark VII Limited in association with Worldvision Enterprises, and was Webb's last weekly series produced before his death. It was also one of the rare times that Webb did not produce a series with Universal Television or Warner Bros. Television; Webb partnered with Universal for every series he made following his departure from Warner Bros., who had named him the president of its television division in the 1960s. The show features two U.S. Air Force investigators with the Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson AFB, charged with investigating UFO sightings. The first season starred William Jordan as Maj. Jake Gatlin alongside Caskey Swaim as Staff Sgt. Harry Fitz. Jordan was a rather no...
